Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Allen-Coughlan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jennifer. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I always knew I wanted to own a shop one day. My interest in design began with antiques and blossomed from there. Just about 10 years ago, right as I met my husband, he introduced me to Frankie Walshe, my design/life partner. Over countless cappuccino’s and chatting about our design dreams, we realized we strive for a similar design aesthetic.
The floral design came organically for us as we found our love for designing with nature. Frankie and I both bring different ideas to the table and design with passion in mind. We are not your grandmother’s florist, our goal is to go beyond that.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning your own business is never an easy route and always a wild bumpy ride. We have learned to take each day as it comes and you never know what will walk in the door. The uncertainty of it all keeps you on the edge of your seat and sometimes pulling your hair out.
Working in the Floral Industry can often be challenging as many different things can affect business. As we’ve all witnessed Mother Nature can be so unpredictable. Weather can be one of the biggest factors, especially during hurricane season causing product delays. At the end of the day, we are so grateful to be working with these beautiful and wild elements, nature provides us with.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Market Floral Studio – what should we know?
We are a floral studio based in South Boston and love helping our clients’ vision come to life.
Specializing in unique floral arrangements that are whimsical yet classic. We strive to use the freshest blooms from the floral market and local farms. Designing a wedding for the off-beat bride or a special event for a corporate client are our favorite types of work as we get to create and design freely.
Another element of our business we offer are the workshops. We wanted to have a space to teach other women the art of floral design. Through our workshops, we encourage women and (men) to come discover their inner “Martha”. After experiencing Frankie’s famed “Irish brown bread” and share our witty life advice, you will leave feeling inspired.
Located on East Broadway, we sell locally sourced goods made by local women such as candles and natural botanicals. Market Floral Studio has transformed into a neighborhood favorite, where customers stop in for some tea and a chat. Our window is forever changing and there is always something new to seek in the shop.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Eye for design, creativity, and innovation. Ability to work with people and help them achieve a particular look or feeling through floral design.
