Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen Matson.
Jen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Photography was a hobby when I was a teenager and in college. In 1998 I started doing art shows such as the Beacon Hill Art Walk and South End Open Studios. I also have photographs in several stores and galleries, such as the Cambridge Artists’ Cooperative and the Old North Church gift shop.
Around 12 years ago I got involved in organizing some of the shows, and now I run The Boston Arts Festival, the Beacon Hill Art Walk and a couple of other annual art and music events.
Has it been a smooth road?
Selling art is a challenge, especially since 2008. I feel it is important to keep these wonderful fine art shows alive, for both the artists and for the community. There are many craft shows but few specifically for 2D fine art such as painting and photography.
Photography has changed so much over the years. I used to shoot film and print my own photographs in the darkroom. The last color darkroom in Boston closed several years ago, so now Colortek prints my photos, but I still prefer shooting film to digital.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the JLM Images story. Tell us more about the business.
I am known for my photographs of Boston, for the art gallery I had in Downtown Crossing from 2008-2015, and for the art shows and events I organize. I’m proud to have kept The Boston Arts Festival and the Beacon Hill Art Walk alive, they are wonderful and unique events.
For my own work, it makes me happy that my art makes people happy! I try to show the beauty of my city, and the other places I travel and hope that my images make everyone’s day a little brighter.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Many changes in photography specifically and the art world in general. We hope to keep creating art and sharing it with others, and to continue to provide free, quality art and music events for the public to experience and enjoy.
