Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Williams.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I got started in music as a kid and eventually went to school to study jazz guitar. When I started teaching it felt natural and maybe that’s because I grew up hearing my mom teach piano lessons in our house. For a while I taught at stores, schools, private and group classes, before eventually teaching on my own full time. Now I’m venturing into creating online courses. As much as I love performing and recording, it’s always great to help people discover music.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. I’ve moved locations several times since I first started teaching guitar and that’s been one of my biggest challenges. It takes time to build up a base of students and I’m fortunate now that I’ve been in the same location for about 8 years, so I have a good core of solid students.

One of the things that sets me apart is that I’m create my own materials, have an online course, and do my best to help students fulfill their vision. And if they don’t know what it is they want to get out of playing guitar, we work on figuring that out.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was a pretty quiet kid. For a while I was mostly into sports, but the main thing that turned me off to that was the coaches. They seemed to take things way too seriously and were often less mature than the kids! Once I first played bass, I knew there was no turning back.
