Meet Jeff Christensen of The Cottage Plum Island

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Christensen.

Jeff, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Grew up in Newbury/Plum Island, College degree at Northeastern in Boston moved back to Plum Island after 10 years in the city. Along with my brother in law and sister we bought “Mr. Moe’s” a staple of almost 40 years and performed a massive overhaul of the property/business.

Turned a liquor store with an attached apartment into a liquor/convenience market, surf shop, ice cream shop, and real estate office all under the same roof. Filled a huge need by locals and tourists alike by providing essentials for the beach plus boutique clothing/swimwear and surf/paddle boards for rent and for sale. Ice cream shop is the only one of its kind on the island and destination for beachgoers and residents of nearby towns.

We also purchased a number of rental properties on the island which we rent seasonally and annually. We have another commercial process that we are in the planning stages of building a restaurant on to further enhance the island we love!

Has it been a smooth road?
The road hasn’t necessarily been smooth but I have a great team behind my back. It’s truly a family business and my family works extremely well together.

The struggle will always be being a seasonal business, constantly having to switch gears before and after our (short) season with staffing and getting used to breakneck speed for a few months and then pushing through the slow winter months.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Cottage Plum Island – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We sell fun and the island lifestyle. It’s a no-brainer to anyone heading to our island that you’ll probably need to stop at The Cottage. Whether you forgot something for the beach or you planned on coming by just to check out whatever new beer/wine/souvenirs/beach gear/clothing/swimwear or whatever that we are bringing in.

We have a large parking lot and do paid beach parking since there aren’t many options on the island! We are also locals from way back so even the old-timers are our pals! We take care of everyone who drives over the bridge.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Boston and the north shore is unique and it’s our home.

The only thing not to like is winter!
