Meet Jay Roddy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Roddy.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jay. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been listening to music since I can remember and my mom played a huge role in that. Growing up, my mom exposed me to a lot of different styles of music like usher, earth wind & fire, and Neil Diamond. It wasn’t until I was around 8 when I started listening to some of hip-hop’s pioneers like Snoop Dogg, biggie, eminem, dmx, and 50 cent.

I think that being exposed to varying genres of music, helped me create a passion for it. My need for music started to develop when I was a senior in high school, so 2011-2012. I played multiple sports in high school but I was consistently anxious, reserved, and struggled to express myself and my issues at home. The same year I was a senior, Drake dropped his second studio album, Take Care, which completely changed my perspective on music.

His style of expression and rawness proved that you can take all your feelings and convert them into lyrics. After that, I discovered the only way to convey my thoughts and problems was to write music. I’ve been rolling with that concept ever since and that brings me to where I’m at today. It’s been 6 years since I started and it’s only the beginning. I’m as hungry as I’ve ever been and there’s no sign of stopping.

Has it been a smooth road?
To be honest, there’s been some challenges along the way but you need to face minor setbacks to be able to grow. Like Will Smith said, “you have to get comfortable with failure” because it’s a huge part of success. One of my biggest struggles is the marketing. I grew up in the suburbs of MA, so there isn’t a huge buzz for hiphop.

People around here don’t respect music and take it as serious as other major music cities do. I put the time in and have spent the last 6 years developing my sound so I’m prepared for anything in the future. I really believe I have the talent, I just need to reach the right audiences and everything will go up from there.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the JayRoddy story. Tell us more about the business.
My name is JayRoddy, I’m a 23 year old from MA, and I make music. My brand is DgnZ, which stands for a shorter version of the word degenerates, pronounced “duh-gens”. The idea behind this stems from my generation of degenerates, which is generation Z, hence why there’s emphasis on the “Z” in DgnZ.

I’m at the point in my life where I like to party and create memories so a big part of my brand reaches out to people who can relate. My generation is filled with college kids who can be degenerates at night and professionals in the day, aka getting shit done when we need to, and that’s what I built my brand on.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
My manager and I have really been grinding over the past couple of months to build a solid brand. Once we can penetrate the market, everything is up from there. We’re just getting started so the next 5-10 are all about building a foundation which are going to be the most important years of this journey.
