Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Coney.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My passion for art has always been there, starting when I was young drawing on the more traditional side, and as I continued to grow, I switched over to the to digital side as a Multimedia Artist(including digital photography). I would have to say that furthering my education was one of the biggest factors in my progress as an artist, even now as a professional I continue to learn. Not only schooling but doing my own research, learning new techniques, discovering other artists. Those things have been priceless to my growth.
My first job in the creative field was as the Lead Artist at a local video game company where we made educational games for public school kids and national parks in North and South America. Working at this company, I realized that I would be able to use my talents to tell stories, change narratives and ultimately help people more than I could have imagined. That realization has helped to shape the artist I am today including the types of pieces I create and projects that I work on. I want every piece to be a defining moment, thought-provoking, from a different perspective.
I have been blessed to do work for great brands and companies like Boston Public Schools, The Boston Celtics, Bose, Nike, Breakfast IV Brothers, Harvard University and HoodFit to name a few. As I continue to do my work, it’s great to see the places that my passion has taken me and to envision where it will take me in the future.
Please tell us about your art.
When people view my photography work, I hope they’re able to grasp the “Defining moments” that I have seen while I was using my camera to capture those moments. During my process of creating any art, I consider three elements: angles, perspectives, and lighting. I always hope that the viewer is able to find their own interpretation of those elements to help them think differently when viewing my artwork.
As a Multimedia Artist, I use a variety of tools in my workflow, including much digital software along with my camera and lighting. I use Adobe Lightroom to edit photos, Photoshop, and Illustrator for 2D graphics, Logo &Branding Design, and Adobe Premiere along with After Effects for Video Editing and Effects. I just hope that seeing my work could inspire any artist, young or old, to realize there are many different ways to express creativity aside from the traditional ways that most people are accustomed to.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I think there should be an increased level of optimism among artists today, with social media allowing creatives to reach larger audiences than in years past. Couple this with advancements in technology and the current entrepreneurship trend in our culture, the artist today should be smiling at the world of possibilities literally at their fingertips.
I think cities like Boston should create more space for artists to curate their Art. Most artists I know only display their art online, but how will they reach fans of arts who don’t have internet access?
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
