So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
North Quincy Auto Academy Started about 6-7 years ago, when we found a perfect location across the street from North Quincy High school. Before I started the Auto Academy I was actually working at North Quincy high school as the Boy’s Volleyball Coach and attending College at the same time. Volleyball has been a passion of mine since I was in middle school and Coaching brought me so much fulfillment and joy. During my senior year of College I realized my Volleyball coaching career was coming to an end because I would have to find a “Real Job.” About 2 months Prior to the end of my last Volleyball season, my brother and his business partner came to me with a new business venture and I thought to myself “WOW” this is perfect timing because now I can fulfill my dream of continuing to Coach and Manage an Auto Academy at the same time. Everything worked out perfectly; my commute from each job was a quick walk across the street. I thought to myself, I can really help Mold Teenagers through Coaching and teach them a skill that will last a lifetime. As of 2018 I am entering my ninth season as a coach and 7 Year as a Driving instructor. NQAA has come a long way from having 3 students in our very first class to having 70 students in our latest class.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not always been easiest path owning an Auto Academy. There has been several occasion that has been very challenging, from Moving Locations to having patience with teenagers to working with the Registry or Motor vehicles. After we were open for about 2-3 years at our original location on the Ground Floor of our current building we have since moved to the second floor and have expanded our classroom size. We went from a 30 Student classroom to classroom that can hold 70 students. Teenagers are not always the easiest to deal with. Not Every Teenager is the same, some are very teachable and learns quickly but then you will have some teenagers that give you a hard time and always doubting everything that you teach them. Lots of ups and downs but we always manage to get through those problems. The Biggest struggles we have are usually working with our partners the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Even more so lately with the big change in the RMV systems this past March. Since it is a new system we are working alongside with the RMV to try to solve certain issues with their new system and at the same time to learn the best way to utilize the new Atlas system. There are always new challenges when owning your own business but all we can do is try to solve each challenge one at a time,
North Quincy Auto Academy – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We at North Quincy Auto Academy teach and preach Traffic Safety laws in the classroom and in our cars. We teach a wide range of students from 16 years old to as old as 65 years old. Our Main focus is teaching new Drivers to drive and to be safe on our Roads. We have an extensive in class room training with lots of book material along with informational videos. Our In Car Driving classes are one on one with an instructor. Our instructors help guide students to become safe drivers along with teaching students necessary skills to pass a RMV Road Test.
I believe we are best known for our instructors on giving students a relaxed and friendly atmosphere to learn how to drive. We make sure that students are in an easy going atmosphere to make their driving experience as best as possible, but we are also strict in vehicles to assure the students are learning as well.
The best part about our Driving school is that we offer alternative Road test that is proctored by the RMV. We usually get a list of 20-30 students and we book all the students for a Group Road test. Usually the Road test would be held at our NQAA location or at the Braintree RMV and the students will use our vehicles for the road Test. We found that this process has a higher Passing Rate because students are already familiar with our cars and the roads that they travel on a daily basis.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To be honest I define my success when my students are successful. I don’t find having the best business or earning the most Money as being successful. When I see my students succeed it brings me great joy and happiness.
Sometimes the best moments are when a student passes and they run out of their cars to give their parents a big hug. There is almost nothing better than a big thank you from the students and parents, honestly each compliment gets me through a tough or long day.
