Meet Jans Alcantara of Jansita in Malden

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jans Alcantara.

Jans, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It all came together after I graduated from UMass Boston with a B.A in Psychology. I knew from that moment that I wasn’t entirely happy, somehow something inside of me felt incomplete. I knew in the back of my mind that I stayed away from my true passion for Modeling. This haunted me for so long that I finally had to make a decision between continuing my career in Psychology or pursuing my dreams. I struggled between these two due to the pressure & fear of letting my family down. My family came to the U.S from Dominican Republic for a better life for my brother and I, and so going against this made it much more complicated. But I also wanted to stay true to myself and being aware that if I didn’t give my dreams a chance I would live my life with an uneasy mind of “what if.”

I chose to go after my dreams with the love and support of my fiancé. He encouraged me to go after what truly makes me happy. I’ve been modeling for a year now and I can honestly say that I’ve never been happier doing what I love.

Has it been a smooth road?
My journey has not been easy by any means, struggling financially with paying bills, and school loans while pursuing my dreams, is extremely challenging. As an independent model I’m looking to get signed with a Modeling agency. The ideal image of beauty in society has made it difficult for women of color like myself to be successful. I refuse to let something like the color of my skin or even my height be the reason why I cannot fulfill my dreams. I’m aware that I’m not the only one dealing with this issue, and that is why I’m fighting to make change. Today I’m focused on growing as a person, building a brand for myself and to inspire those who can relate, to break any barriers that stand in our way. To spread confidence, strength and self-love across the world.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Jansita – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
As a model, I let my personality shine through my photos. This is where I feel the most comfortable being myself. I love doing anything from fun, natural, weird, to sensual poses, I try to implement something different every time, depending on the mood of the shoot. I love the artistic feel of portraying different personas, this is where I really get to learn what I’m capable of as a model. What sets me apart from other models, is that I love a challenge, and the satisfaction that comes along with it after overcoming it.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Boston is my home, I’ve been living here for 8 years now and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. The city is beautiful and has a lot of history. Before I moved to Boston I lived in Miami for 10+ years. Having the opportunity to experience the different seasons throughout the year is quite extraordinary. Although I’m not too fond of winter storms, they can be pretty brutal.
