Today we’d like to introduce you to Janet McGlynn.
Janet, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I first learned to sew with my mother who was a seamstress/tailor in England during World War II.
One of the highlights of my sewing career, was producing a cable television show for Greater Media Cable Systems entitled “Say Sew”. I was sponsored by Bernina Sewing Machines.
I love teaching. I graduated from what was Bridgewater State Teachers College, now Bridgewater State University. I have taught sewing throughout the South Shore in many adult education programs.
There has been a browning interest in the sewing arts once again with advent of “Project Runway” on television. Several years ago, My granddaughter Ruth encouraged me to teach sewing once again. I have a well stocked home studio with a variety of modern equipment and supplies for my students.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One of the challenges has been balancing the obligations of family/ personal life with finding time to both sew and teach sewing.
There are fewer stores selling fabrics locally but now there is an abundance of online sources for fabrics from around the world.
There are so many learning resources online as well.
Computerized sewing machines are now relatively inexpensive and so easy to operate. I have a variety of machines which allow students to quickly duplicate ready-to-wear.
I specialize in teaching students fast, effective ways to sew stretch knits, especially using fabrics and techniques for activewear and sportswear.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Say Sew with Janet story. Tell us more about the business.
I am proud of the accomplishments of my sewing students. I teach small groups of three to five students. I strive to give individualized attention to each. I also teach private lessons.
I think what sets me apart from others, who teach sewing, is that I am not motivated by profit at this time in my life. I have an earnest desire to pass on what I have learned to future generations.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I was fortunate enough to have an opportunity to produce one of the first televised cable sewing series. I learned a lot about video editing and went on to produce some of first streaming media on the internet.
I ran a company called Superlative Multimedia which was based in Hingham until I retired in 2009.
