Meet Jamie Mathison of One Ocean One Love Shop in Rockport and Gloucester

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Mathison.

Jamie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was working as a marine mammal trainer at the New England Aquarium in Boston. It was my dream job, but I needed a side job to make ends meet. I have always lobed art, but hadn’t quite figured out how to make it a career. I was sitting on Laguna Beach in California when it struck me to block print on t-shirts. The ocean has always been an inspiration for me, so I knew it would be a huge part of my company. I live directly on the ocean, and see the effect that pollution has on it. It was my goal to draw a connection between my company and ocean conservation. I chose the name One Ocean because I wanted to give back in some way.

We donate 5% of net profits back to a nonprofit that we cofounded the Cape Ann Maritime Partnership,
Cape Ann Maritime Partnership also known as C.A.M.P,  consists of individuals from NOAA Marine Debris Program, Seaside Sustainability, Inc., USCG, Maritime Gloucester, Gloucester’s Clean City Commission, and One Ocean One Love. We have one goal in mind: eradicate marine pollution. Through the usage of Marine Skimmers and Seabins throughout the Cape Ann area, we are taking lead in the fight against marine debris.

One Ocean began in 2015 as an Etsy store and attending local craft fairs. It grew quickly when we found the perfect brick and mortar location on Bearskin Neck in Rockport MA. People seemed to love our connection to the ocean as well as the fact that we hand printed everything ourselves. In 2017 we opened a second location to dedicate as a printing location as well as a second store. I was finally able to move the production out of my kitchen and into a real workspace. Both locations are located directly on the water, which helps further connect our customers to our mission of protecting our beautiful ocean.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has actually been a really smooth road. Our friends, family and community have been extremely supportive. Of course we have faced some setbacks and challenges, but most have been small.

One Ocean One Love Shop – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
One Ocean One Love, is an ocean conservation minded clothing brand that donates 5% back to the ocean. We hand print and design all our clothing right here in Gloucester! Pretty much all of our designs are inspired by our love for the ocean. For example, we have shirts that read “Keep it clean beaches” “This planet needs you to give a sh*t” and “Respect the locals” with a shark in the middle.

In the past we have donated to The Seabins kick starter fund, Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, and many more. However, now we primarily donate to CAMP! We also host regular volunteer beach cleanups around town even though we do our own cleanups pretty much every day!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Honestly, my biggest marker of success is hearing the feedback about our mission and how it has inspired people. I absolutely love seeing our merchandise walk by me on the street, but most of all, I love hearing that our customers have been inspired by our mission to take care of our ocean.
