Meet James Kaya in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Kaya.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started as a jewelry apprentice at a very young age. When I was in my early twenties I opened my first store in Boston and soon after I began earning national and international recognition for my designs and pieces.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Boston is a very traditional city with its roots in classic aesthetics, and my designs tend to be much more modern and contemporary which makes it difficult for me to appeal to local taste.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about James Kaya – what should we know?
I am a goldsmith who specializes in custom designed jewelry and I design and make every one of my pieces by hand. I pride myself on being one of the most accredited and accomplished jewelers in New England. I would say that what sets me apart from others is that I execute my jewelry entirely: I sketch, design, and create the final pieces all myself.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
First, my mentor under whom I completed my apprenticeship deserves credit for introducing me to jewelry as a career and helping me grow in the industry. I would also like to recognize my family for all of their support through the years.
