Meet Jacqui Goldberg of Cakes by J and J in Framingham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqui Goldberg.

Jacqui, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always loved to bake and enjoyed the appreciation of bringing a delicious dessert to a party. I decorated my first cake when my son had his first birthday and really enjoyed it. When my twins were in preschool, a friend and I decided to take a cake decorating class together and it sparked something for me. My friend and I decided to start a business together since there was nowhere in Metrowest to get a good cake. After a few months, my friend decided that the business aspect wasn’t for her. I totally embraced it – I love the customer contact, the feeling of accomplishment that I get from completing a cake, and most importantly, the enthusiasm that my customers have for my finished products. I’ve been in business for 7.5 years now. I have grown the business from doing 1-3 cakes per week to doing as many as 14 per week.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Most of the challenges that I’ve faced have had to do with figuring out what my limitations are and exactly what I want to be doing. I’ve learned that I shouldn’t say “yes” to every order. That it’s okay to take time to be with my kids and to not be working. That I should stick with doing the cake decorating that I love and push myself a little outside of my comfort zone while still recognizing the aspects of cake decorating that I don’t enjoy. I love doing colored chocolate work while 3D fondant figures drive me nuts – and that’s okay!

Cakes by J and J – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I make custom cakes and cupcakes. I pride myself on my customer service – I get back to people quickly, I build positive relationships with my customers, I listen to what people want for their special event and deliver it. I specialize in colored chocolate work – I make 2D figures out of colored chocolate so they look exactly the way that you expect them to and they taste delicious! All of my cakes are made from scratch and custom made for exactly what the customer wants. I absolutely love it when customers return to me year after year to celebrate their child’s birthday or when I do a bridal shower cake, wedding cake, baby shower cake, baptism cake and then a 1st birthday cake – my cakes are a part of people’s celebrations!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment was when a customer emailed me to find out my availability before booking their child’s birthday party because they didn’t want to celebrate without one of my cakes 🙂
