Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline San Jose.
Jacqueline, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
4 years ago I would never imagine that I would be the person I am today. All my life I’ve been very involved in the arts; whether it was painting with my grandma, performing with my high schools marching band, singing at an open mic, or just sketching in my sketchbook, I loved indulging in the creative world. I wasn’t quite sure what career path I wanted to take, there were so many things that genuinely interested me. I loved music and performing but at the same time, art was always something that came so easy to me.
For me, it was the ultimate form of expression. At the end of my high school career, I came to realize that and decided to attend Massachusetts college of art and design with an undecided major. Long story short, fashion design found me and took me on this long 4-year journey that changed my life. I’m grateful to have had amazing experiences in this incredible industry, it’s definitely been brutal but very worth it!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not smooth at all. Art school is filled with sleepless nights, lots of crying, and harsh critiques but it definitely helps you become a strong confident artist. I am proud to say that art school has given me a thick skin, and after graduating I know I could achieve anything!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Jackie San Jose Design story. Tell us more about the business.
My experience and design aesthetic is very well rounded. With experience at an evening atelier, a big sportswear company and a diverse fashion education that taught me everything from draping to tailoring to fashion illustration, I’m grateful to say that I’ve gotten to learn a lot. My personal interests lie in lingerie and streetwear. My whole senior thesis was rooted in the idea of the 2 used together. I enjoy creating corsets, lingerie and experimenting with sheer and solid fabrics. I enjoy textiles and creating custom illustrated prints which I believe makes my brand unique.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
The fashion industry is all about luck. It’s about who you run into, who sees your work, and timing. I can definitely say that I’ve had good luck in terms of who I’ve met in this industry; most of those experiences landed me internships and opportunities which is very hard to come across working In the design field.
My advice to anyone in this field is to meet and build relationships with as many people as you can! Do collaborations and be open to talk to others, the art and design industry is built upon networking!
