Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaclyn Fodor.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jaclyn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I was in high school I developed a love and passion for food. I grew up in such a diet culture and I constantly saw commercials on weight loss and women around me were always trying to lose weight. I was under the impression that to be healthy I had to eat low calorie frozen meals, or count points. I knew that this was never the quality of life I wanted for myself. I love food and being social and celebrating too much to ever miss out on those things just because I heard that they weren’t “healthy”.
That is what led me to Johnson & Wales University. They have such an amazing program that combines culinary arts with nutrition. It was my perfect fit. After a 4 year bachelor’s degree there I went onto Keene State College for a dietetic internship and some post grad work. This is something that is required to become a Registered Dietitian.
Following school, I got a job at a hospital in New Hampshire and also started working in private practice. There was such a huge different between the two jobs that after a year I knew I had to devote all my time to the private practice I still work in today.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Everyone can Google “How to eat healthy”. Combating most of the myths out there is always a struggle. That is why my practice has shifted to more of a behavior change approach than just telling people what to eat. This has helped tremendously.
Also, the business side of things was a struggle. I came into this with no experience in a small business. I’m always learning, succeeding, learning, falling and then learning some more. It is humbling and necessary all at the same time.
Nutrition in Motion – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am part of a network of Registered Dietitians called Nutrition in Motion. Working in private practice is hard work, there is a lot of business and marketing and struggles on a daily basis. But to watch a client learn how to eat healthy, love the food they are eating, and make the steps to creating permanent behavior change makes it all worth it. I’m not the food police, and there is no “good” foods and “bad” foods. It’s about finding the right balance that you can live with while still reaching your goals.
I specialize in weight loss, metabolic disorders, meal planning and behavior change. I’m known as the “foodie” and I wouldn’t have it any other way!
Part of the work I do is one on one counseling in our offices or at worksites, the other half is a program called The Right Weigh (TRW). TRW is a multidisciplinary 12 week approach to permanent lifestyle change. I am currently working with 2 colleagues to make this program available online. We are set to launch September 2018!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Helping develop The Right Weigh program. There has been so much love and sweat poured into this program. We have just hit our 50th group of adults that have completed the program in 5 years. We are kick off our online platform this fall and I’m so psyched to be able to help more people in this age of technology.
