Today we’d like to introduce you to Hung Doan.
Hung, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been a pharmacist for 13 years. I started out in a retail setting with a big chain pharmacy 13 years ago and worked corporate for 10 years. Patient focused and quality care were priorities when I first graduated and started out in pharmacy. And that was the reason why I got into pharmacy. However, as the years go by the big corporation is slowly focusing on prescription counts and profits. Patient care or time allotted to make sure your patients understand how to use their medication was less of a priority. I was slowly getting tired of working as a “pill counter” and felt like my job was meaningless. About 4 years ago, a few of my friends in California and Florida were also tired of the “corporate life” and decided to open their own pharmacies. Although it was hard work, but they found it very rewarding, so they encouraged me to follow their path. It was one the best decisions I have ever made. I am so fortunate with the help of my wife, Thuy and friends; I was able to open my own pharmacy. Luckily with the support of our loyal customers, our pharmacy is continuing to grow. We are opening a second location to help further our compounding business.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it has been a struggle. It’s not easy to compete with the big chain pharmacies. The small guys like us do not have the money or resources to compete with the big guys. However, what really set us apart from the big corporations is we always make the time to improve patient care by making sure every single patient that walk through our doors understand his or her medication. We have pride in helping patients improve their healthcare.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a full service independent pharmacy. Our focus is patient care. No matter how slow or busy we are, we always make sure we take out the time to make sure every single one of our patients understand the proper use of our medication. One of the services we are slowly trying to focus on right now is custom compounding medications. There is an increasing need for custom compounding medications. There are quite a number of patients who can’t take commercial medications due to allergies or the need for a custom dose. We commonly see this in pediatric patients and patients with special or rare diseases. We are opening a second location in Quincy to expand our compounding labs to further help this special need population. In addition to many of the other services, we provide free delivery to the local areas with the understanding that some of our patients need the extra help in getting access to their medications.
What were you like growing up?
I have always been a social butterfly. That is why I love my job. I enjoy talking to patients and help them understand their medications. I am very active and a big sports fan. I am big supporter of the New England Patriots- go Pats! In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family and friends.
