Meet Howie Haywood of Blackmoor Bar + Kitchen and Olde Magoun’s Saloon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Howie Haywood.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always wanted to be a Chef and I started cooking at very early age. My grandfather and Aunts were all Chefs and amazing cooks, so I was exposed to good food at an early age. My Aunt Odell’s beef stroganoff is insane. Her pastries can rival any French trained pastry chef.

I watched Julia child as often as possible and took home economics in junior high and did everything I could do at young age to learn about food. At 15 I got a job working in a French restaurant in Newton, where they hired an older French chef from Paris. Lucienne Adrienne. I was in food heaven, everything I saw watching Julia child, was right in front of me. Pates, terrines, chaud froid, charcuterie. It was more informative than culinary school.

During high school I washed dishes at the original Allegro on Moody St in Waltham. Jim Burke was a Chef’s Chef. Everyone would come around and talk shop with him….Jasper White, Lidia Shire, Moncef Budeff, Chris Lesinger, Patrick Noe, and Jody Adams. These are some the chefs that paved the awesome food scene in Boston.

My formal training was spent at the Culinary Institute of America Class of ’89. After that, I traveled around the world for about 10 years dipping my toes into different cuisines and eventually landed back home working with an old friend I grew up with, Greg Coughlin who owned Olde Magoun’s Saloon in Somerville. Today, I’m the Head Chef at both Olde Magoun’s Saloon as well as Blackmoor Bar + Kitchen which recently opened up in Charlestown!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Blackmoor Bar + Kitchen AND Olde Magoun’s Saloon – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’m very proud of the food that we put out at both Olde Magoun’s Saloon and Blackmoor Bar + Kitchen. Many people are surprised that they can get an upscale, delicious meal at such a good value. Our food speaks for itself and the regulars keep coming back.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
No plans right now – chugging away at both restaurants and living the dream!

Chef Howie is a masterful Chef and very likeable person. This article needs to be proof-read, the many typos corrected, and re-posted. It does not do Chef Howie nor BostonVoyager justice to publish an article with as many typos as this article contains.
    Thank you!
