Meet Helena Martin of Metropolitan Fashionista in Cambridge

Today we’d like to introduce you to Helena Martin.

Helena, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always had a passion for fashion. I grew up surrounded by fabrics, patterns, scissors, thread and needles. My grandmother was a professional embroidery worker and my mother was a seamstress. I remember that from a young age all my clothing was custom made by them.

In Brazil I pursued a career in the financial area. After some years of living in the USA, I decided to follow my dream to have a role in the field of fashion. The idea to start a fashion blog happened after a trip to New York where I attended shows at New York Fashion Week. During that visit everything was magical to me. When I returned to Boston I decided to begin writing a fashion blog. The result was the creation of Metropolitan Fashionista, a fashion and lifestyle bilingual English/Portuguese blog. In recent years I have made many connections. I was invited to write for a fashion magazine and I also began writing a regular fashion column for a local Brazilian newspaper.

These experiences helped me acquire more knowledge and credibility in the fashion world. As a result, in recent years I have been invited to many designers’ shows during New York Fashion Week. Each show has been an incredible experience for me. I have met many people who are famous and influential in the field of fashion.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have had some challenges since I started my blog, but I persisted. I accepted my mistakes and closed doors as learning experiences from which to move forward.

Metropolitan Fashionista – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
In addition to my Metropolitan Fashionista blog, I work as an art event organizer for the Brazilian artists community in the Boston area. In November of 2016, I organized the Brazilian Arts Impressions, a month-long exhibit at the Scollay Square Gallery in Boston City Hall. This exhibit showcased the works of ten outstanding Brazilian artists. The works included painting, sculpture, photography and examples of Brazilian arts and crafts. I am proud of my achievements, especially my blog because it is written in both English and Portuguese. The blog talks about not only current fashion and my own wardrobe, but also includes information about beauty, travel and art. Occasionally, I add things about history which is another passion of mine. I am grateful to my readers and all the people who helped me achieve my goals.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I believe that the luck of being in the right place at the right time has been part of my success. Certainly attending New York Fashion Week for the first time gave me the inspiration to start my blog. There have been moments during other years at Fashion Week when I had the opportunity to meet important designers and fashion photographers. I’ve also enjoyed being in the same room with Vanessa Williams, Valentino, Iris Apfel and Whoopi Goldberg with whom I had my picture taken.
