Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidi Mae.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I started being interested in photography when I was 19. To me Photography and visual art is a way of translating an idea in my head, into an actual image that everyone can see.
I grew up on tour, performing music and comedy in a traveling theatre show. Because of touring for most of the year, I didn’t have a lot of friends, and suffered from social anxiety. But my artistic side started flourishing and when MySpace came out, for the first time things clicked.
Being someone who struggles with social anxiety and has a hard time verbally expressing myself. Social media became the platform that I could share those thoughts and feelings through.
But instead of struggling to find the words to express myself. I create images. Because an image speaks a thousand words.
Because I travelled so extensively, I had to teach myself photography and editing.
When I want to create, I work with my family or boyfriend. I explain to them the image I want to make, the angle I want the shot to be taken from and the overall vibe I want it to have. Then I hop in front of the camera for them to take the shot. Later I’ll edit the image on Lightroom to really bring out the mood and emotion I’m wanting to express.
To this day I still travel nationally, and internationally. And I share those adventures with my followers through photography and social media.
I’m very grateful to have the life that I do. And hopefully through sharing my travels I’ll inspire others to go out and experience things they never have before.
Please tell us about your art.
I hope that my art inspires people to go out and live their own adventures.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
I think one of the biggest challenges facing artists today is the temptation to create what sells vs creating in their own voice and vision.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
