HariKirin, Manjit Kaur and ShamRang, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The Ashram began in Dorchester in the 1970’s, moving to Millis in 1981, teaching Kundalini Yoga & Meditation ever since. This is the yoga of awareness and current research proves its effect on all forms of mental and physical health including genomic expression. Yoga at the Ashram is an internationally recognized training site in Kundalini Yoga, Meditation, and Yoga Therapy. It is a hidden jewel in the greater Boston area, offering everything from daily yoga classes to certifications in therapeutic yoga, including Yoga Enhanced Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Manjit Khalsa, EdD, has been with the ashram since its days in Dorchester in the early 1970’s, and currently serves as the ashram president. She is a licensed psychologist and coauthor of the Yoga CBT Workbook for Anxiety, published in Sept 2017 with New Harbinger Publications.

HariKirin Khalsa, MD, has been teaching Kundalini Yoga since 2007. She is a board certified obstetrician-gynecologist currently on sabbatical from clinical practice. She directs Yoga at the Ashram and serves as faculty in the yoga therapy program.

Yoga at the Ashram is an innovation hub of synergy between ancient yogic wisdom and cutting-edge science.

ShamRang Singh Khalsa, MD, is an emergency physician who has also practiced Kundalini yoga and meditation as a student of Yogi Bhajan for over 35 years. Dr. ShamRang merges Ayurveda (traditional Indian yogic healing), yoga and western medicine, utilizing meditation with a strong focus on helping people open to their own self-healing.

Has it been a smooth road?
As with any organization which has stood the test of time, there have been ups and downs, but the current road is steady, sure and growing.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Yoga at the Ashram: the Baba Siri Chand Yoga & Retreat Center story. Tell us more about the business.
Yoga at the Ashram is a beautiful, hand-built yoga studio and training center located at an ashram on 18 acres. The fact that people have been meditating here for nearly 40 years creates a palpable “vibe” of peace.

The ashram is a spiritual residential community following the teachings of Yogi Bhajan, who brought Kundalini Yoga to the West.

It also is home to a Sikh Gurdwara (place of worship) on Sundays which is based upon singing Kirtan (Gurbani Kirtan in the Sikh Tradition). The ashram is an interesting merger of interests in yoga, Sikh Dharma, or both and has an East-West flavor mixing the native-born USA and Punjabi backgrounds, foods, and traditions.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Yoga at the Ashram is undergoing a period of growth and renewal. Kundalini Yoga is “trending.” As trainings and community grow, the ashram will expand its housing, yoga space, and healing arts and renew the land from a permaculture perspective.
