Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Wirtz.
Hannah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my interior design business, HMW Designs, as a very small freelance interior design business. Helping out family and friends create spaces they loved.
Striving for excellence and coming up short for the first 2 years, the business grew to be located in Littleton, MA. It gained a few more followers outside of the family and friends grouping. We even were listed as ‘Best of Houzz’ in 2018. And we are growing every day.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
At the age of 21, it was a hard start for a small business, in a small town. Freelance work wasn’t the easiest. Most of the time making a name for myself came with the low, low price of FREE. My very first client I had was a commercial project I worked on with a friend. Let me tell you, that was the biggest life lesson I’ve ever had.
Contracts are a must, research is a must, and being right out of college can set you up for some pretty mean people who want to take advantage of you. After that long ordeal, I thought this business wasn’t for me. I contemplated what I was going to do for work because I knew for sure, one day I would be my own boss. But I wasn’t sure if design work was in my wheelhouse.
After six months of many pros and con lists, I went to the town of Littleton and became HMW Designs. I did use the power of social media, marketing at local business’ and just word of mouth. Slowly, very slowly, but surely I started gaining more customers. I’ve learned that there are bumps in the road but if you have a little bit of faith and a whole lot of support from your family and friends, you can get through just about anything on that road.
Please tell us about HMW Designs.
HMW Designs is an interior design firm that specializes in home design. We design with a young, modern flair on top of farmhouse chic. We have a wide range of services that include paint selections, furniture staging, organization, decorating, remodeling & we have dabbled in home flipping. What sets HMW Designs apart from most is that I’m from three generations of creative women. My grandmother is a wonderful artist & painter.
My mother has her own design flair, constantly decorating and redesigning our home as I grew up, and I have earned my interior design degree. I have also learned so much from my father, a carpenter and cabinet maker, a real ‘Mr. Fix It’. I’ve learned through watching, from reading & from doing my entire life. And that is also what makes me proud of my company. I’ve always had a passion for creating something out of nothing and being able to share it with the ones around me.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
No. I believe everything in life you can learn from. No matter how many mistakes you make, you can learn from it.
Again, my very first project is a prime example. If I could have turned around and walked out that door at my very first business meeting if I had known what was coming. You bet I would have. But I had no idea. And from that, I’ve learned SO much, and I wouldn’t ever want to take that away from myself.
