Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Roberts.
Hannah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We are a Floral Design Studio working on weddings in New England. Sorella has been around for 8 years now and it has been many things. It started because a friend of a friend of a friend asked my sister and I if we would do the flowers for her wedding. She knew both of us had experience with weddings and se we agreed. When the wedding was done, my sister and I looked at each other and said “Wow we work well together, we should give this a go!” Then it just snowballed from there. We decided to name it Sorella because it means Sister in Italian. It began as a side project working on weddings on the weekends. Four years later we had the opportunity to open a shop in Contoocook, NH with our parents. Little bit into it my sister had to move and wasn’t able to help out. Then I began realizing that retail wasn’t quite for me but not regretting having that opportunity at all and loved every minute of it, it wasn’t quite feeding my passion. Closed shop 3 years later and started my at home Floral Studio. Where I work on weddings in the New England area and work on local deliveries. I feel like I have finally found my place and am so thankful everyday I have been given the support to do what I love. Took me awhile but that is part of owning your own business, you got to try new things and go with the flow to find what works. Now I work from my home barn that I am currently fixing up and starting to grow my own flowers with hopes of being a Flower Farm one day.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Running a business is never a smooth road. There are always obstacles big and small along the way. Navigating the business side can be a challenge because I am a creative and my brain doesn’t think that way sometimes! I have found the support through my family and other business owners to get me through.
Please tell us about Sorella Flower Co.
With being a Floral Design Studio, I am able to spend my time and focus on each wedding. Meeting with each Bride gives me a chance to really get to know each couples and get a feel for their personalities and style. I strive to have your personality shine through your wedding florals. Have fun with it because flowers can bring life to any event and they should show who you are as a couple. Let’s think outside the box! You are fun and lively couple, let’s do bright and vibrant colors! You are more traditional, have some sophistication brought in with lush florals. Want you event to be whimsy, have a fresh garden picked looked. It is amazing what florals can bring to any event.
Local flowers! There are some really wonderful local flower farms in the area that I love to use. Sometimes when a Bride grants me the freedom to create, I love to take their color palette and create the week of. Flowers can change from week to week. One week they are small and dark purple and the next week they can be big and light purple. I love going to my wholesalers and local farms and see what looks best that week and pull things together. NOW I am currently starting to grow my own flowers in hopes of becoming a Flower Farm.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wouldn’t go back and change anything. All the ups and downs brought me to where I am today. I have learned what not to do, what to focus on and where my strengths best lie. Also I have learned to never be afraid to ask for help! That has been the hardest because at first I thought it should weakness but it shows so much strength. Admitting you need help and that there are always people who want to help.
