Meet Hallie Krechevsky of Hallie’s Garden in Huron Village

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hallie Krechevsky.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Hallie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Having majored in Spanish at Brandeis and unsure about what I wanted to do with my life, I started working in 1982 for a produce/flower shop in Huron Village called Le Jardin. I thought I would last 6 months, I stayed for 13 years. For five years I worked with produce. When I was offered the opportunity to manage the flower business, I jumped at the chance. That began my journey into the crazy, wonderful world of flowers. In 1995, I was approached by a woman with a storefront to rent in the South End. That was the moment that I realized that it was time to move on, and I decided to leave my job and start my own business. That South End deal eventually fell through, but my friends and customers encouraged me to seek a location in Cambridge, where I was known and where I lived.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not exactly a smooth road. Huge learning curve when it came to floral design.

The best thing I did was take an adult ed class at Arlington High School, taught by Arlington florist Deb Cody. Each week we were asked to recreate a design she made in front of us. It was quickly apparent that I was not a natural when it came to floral design. But I also realized that I had an intense passion for design, and that I was sure my interest and motivation would carry me where I needed to go.

Please tell us about Hallie’s Garden.
We are a full service florist which means we do daily deliveries, weddings, funerals, corporate accounts, parties, proms, graduations and everything in between. We are definitely known for the freshness of our flowers, the creativity of our designs, our personable, approachable customer service.

We spend a lot of time shopping for our flowers, and a lot of time processing them and caring for them. I’m most proud of our business ethic. We do what we do well, and we help our customers make their best choices. It’s not about selling a certain amount of flowers. It’s about finding the right flower, or amount of flowers, for a particular situation. I think the best bouquets come out of collaboration with the customer. And there is just so much more that happens during the process of picking out flowers. Stories, laughter, shared wisdom….you can’t put a price tag on that. If I had to sum it up in one word, collaboration would be it.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
