Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Weinstock.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started working in the restaurant industry at 14 washing dishes. One day a line cook called out sick and I was put on the line. I have been working in restaurants ever since, spending the majority of my time as a chef, but in recent years spending more time working in the front of the house.
7 years ago I began working with Peter Ackerman at Salvatore’s, at that time the company was owned by Sal Lupoli. In 2015 Sal sold the two Boston Salvatore’s to Peter and left the corporate office to come with him. We had discussed that those two restaurants weren’t the end game for us, we would be looking to grow our group and that myself and Ryan Pozerycki would be brought in as partners.
Fairly quickly the old Victory Pub space in the Orient Heights neighborhood of East Boston was up for rent. Having lived in the area since 2004 I knew it well, and knew that the neighborhood was growing and in need of a neighborhood spot to grab a beer, a burger, maybe a bourbon, and hang out and watch a game, or meet some of your neighbors. We opened in May of 2017.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The restaurant and bar industry always has its challenges. I will say this, the opening of Renegade’s was one of the smoothest I’ve been involved in. It was the easiest to staff by far, all of our employees live in the area, they all have a vested interest in the neighborhood.
Renegade’s Pub – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As a small company, I’m proud of how we’ve grown so quickly and successfully. I’m also extremely proud of the team we’ve cultivated. We are a company that hires from within, all of our team in management and leadership positions are homegrown. This has become an important part of our culture.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The day we opened Renegade’s, being an owner for the first time was pretty amazing.
