Meet Greg Casten of Master Mechanics Automotive in Natick

Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Casten.

Greg, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Originally, I went to school at East Coast Aero Tech to fix planes and graduated in 1980. After school I worked at Norwood airport but the economy and industry weren’t doing very good so I left there and went to work for Bernardi Honda for what I thought was gonna be a short time till I found better work at an airport.

Bernardi sent me to Honda School where I learned to be a factory trained master technician. I grew to really enjoy fixing cars and worked for Bernardi for 14 years and rose to the position of shop foreman. I also took my ASE courses and became an ASE master technician and L1 certified.

In my off-work hours, I was always helping friends and family fix their cars. I grew such a following that I didn’t have enough time to help them all so in 1993 to open Master Mechanics specializing Honda/Acura and any Japanese built vehicle.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As with any small business there are typical ups and downs depending on how the economy is doing. But striving to always do right by my customers has helped to make a successful and long-lasting business

Please tell us about Master Mechanics Automotive.
Our automotive repair business specializes in repairing Japanese cars. Honda/Acura Toyota/Lexus/Scion, Subaru, Mazda, Nissan/Infiniti, and we also repair Hyundai and Kia.

Our goal was to provide a dealership level experience to customers without the price tag. Our aim is to provide quality and honest work. To repair the things that need repair and to let you know what does not.

What sets us apart from other places is we strive for quality and honesty. We love and want to use factory parts when possible and when it makes sense for long lasting repairs. But to also use aftermarket parts when it is suitable and provides worthwhile cost savings.

Our honesty is second to none, too often we are handed estimates and quotes from other places for thousands of dollars of repairs for things that may not even need to be done or incredibly overpriced for the work needed to be performed. But also, we provide a soundboard for the cars that are older and that do need a lot of work and if they are worth investing in. Helping our customers make the right decision is always our priority.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Going camping with my father on Monomoy island on the cape going fishing and catching stripers when I was 10 years old.
