Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. George Kroumpouzos.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Kroumpouzos. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
After working full-time in academia and then in a multi-specialty practice, the time had come – the desire to start my own Dermatology practice became stronger. I wanted the flexibility to offer various treatments to my patients and use medical devices that I felt worked best. The preparation for establishing my new practice was overwhelming at first, but after about 6 months, I knew that I had made the right decision. Choosing the best available space and making it functional and personable was crucial to the success of the new practice.
Passion, hard work, and dedication, helped us establish a solid and reputable practice in just 3 years. As we continue to grow, we are now focused on expanding our surgical and cosmetic services to include whole body rejuvenation. We wanted to keep the practice small and manageable, at least for the first few years. Choosing a smaller footprint affords us the opportunity to offer exceptional, personalized patient care.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Identifying and recruiting top talent was a challenging, time consuming process, but we knew that forming a great team was crucial to our success. Also, selecting and implementing the best Dermatology electronic health record (EHR) system was essential to maintaining the highest quality of patient care. Designing a state-of-the-art website (www.gkderm.com) helped in establishing a strong online presence as well as facilitating patient education and communication.
Another challenge was balancing practice ownership with a demanding academic career that includes a commitment in teaching and research as well as participation as speaker at international conferences. Dividing my efforts between research, education, and medical practice is challenging but also rewarding and highly gratifying. I have been on the faculty in Dermatology at Brown Medical School since 2005, and currently serve as Clinical Associate Professor of Dermatology. I frequently guest-lecture at medical institutions in the US and abroad, and serve as Professor of Dermatology, Collaborator, at Jundiaí Medical School in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about GK Dermatology, PC – what should we know?
At GK Dermatology, we endeavor to serve equally well patients with complex medical problems and those with cosmetic needs. GK Dermatology is about 40% surgical/cosmetic and 60% medical. I specialize in Gynecologic/Obstetric Dermatology and Pigmentary Disorders with a significant amount of original contributions to the literature, including the Text Atlas of Obstetric Dermatology. I receive requests to see pregnant patients with skin conditions not only from Massachusetts, but also other States as well as international requests to consult on such patients.
GK Dermatology has an extensive evaluation process for new technologies and procedures. We are physician driven, with stringent protocols and supervision to maximize patient safety.
We make every effort to accommodate patients promptly, especially those with urgent needs; this characterizes the way we operate and is greatly appreciated by patients and referring physicians alike. We allow ample time for each visit making sure that patients understand all aspects of their condition and management plan. We take pride in serving our patients and establishing long lasting relationships.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Commitment, responsibility, hard work and focus on patient satisfaction are the reasons to our success. At GK Dermatology, our patients are like an extended family. Our practice has grown substantially mainly from satisfied patients who refer their family members and friends to us. Happy patients lead to long-term relationships, and they have helped built and shape our practice and strong reputation.
Additionally, it is extremely important to keep up with updates and newest procedures. Dermatology is about the whole skin – I strive to be a well-rounded Dermatologist diagnosing skin cancer, treating complex medical cases, and helping patients look and feel better.
As a physician, I am always open to new ideas, and involved in clinical trials proving the outcomes of new technologies. The biggest and most meaningful professional reward is combining teacher, researcher, and clinician roles and making a positive impact to the lives of patients. I am fortunate to have this unique opportunity in my daily practice and deeply indebted to our patients for their trust and confidence in GK Dermatology.
