Meet Ginny Williams, Williams Fine Art Dealers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ginny Williams, Williams Fine Art Dealers.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have loved and created art for as long as I can remember. As a senior in high school I was offered the chance to take a class at nearby Colby College and when I discovered all the studio art classes were full, I enrolled in an art history class and loved it! When I found that no colleges were actually teaching traditional art/painting techniques with a basis in studying from life and using traditional materials, I decided to study art history, making art on the side all along. As an adult I worked as a self-taught artist, all the while searching for the training I so desired. Moving to the Boston area in 2005, I discovered a small atelier where I was able to take some great life drawing classes and later, I discovered the Academy of Realist Art, where I spent several years learning all I could while juggling a young family.

While at ARA, I met several incredibly talented artists who were not showing their work in galleries and the seed was planted to one day open an art gallery dedicated to well-trained, highly proficient artists who were in need of a launch. Little did I know that an opportunity to open an art gallery would present itself just a short time later. Williams Fine Art Dealers opened in April, 2016.

Please tell us about your art.
I have always loved still life. Far from just pictures of pretty objects, still life presents an opportunity to tell a story, or present a point of view. For me, the genre is first and foremost, though, a means of celebrating beauty in the simple objects that we may otherwise take for granted. In our fast-paced, image saturated world, still life offers a moment of pause, of quiet contemplation. Choosing how the light falls on objects, the angle at which they’re presented, or even the combination of objects, I can control the mood, the message conveyed or the kind of involvement I want from the viewer. I am still learning and painfully aware of my inadequacies.

I think this allows me to passionately promote the artists whom I represent at Williams Fine Art Dealers; they are all far better artists than I, and all work traditionally. because I am an artist, I am able to talk about their methods and strengths with a level of understanding that is not always present at art galleries.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
Many of the best artists who have “made it” still supplement their income from time to time through teaching classes or workshops-that’s just the nature of the beast!

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
