Today we’d like to introduce you to Geena Duffy.
Geena is a 19-year-old Pop/Hip-Hop/R&B artist from Boston, Massachusetts. Beginning her musical journey at the age of 6, Duffy has always wanted to pursue a musical career, whether it was playing drums or other instruments, and has been the drummer of multiple small bands as a kid. However, at the age of 12, discovered she had a talent for hip-hop and pop music, influenced by artists such as Justin Bieber, Jake Miller, Austin Mahone, & Drake, and broke out as a solo artist.
Her first ever youtube video was posted in the summer of 2013, a cover of the song “No Lies” by Chicago “Eminem-wannabe”, Denace. Duffy contacted Denace on social media, sending the link to her cover, and successfully got his attention. Denace later posted the cover, which started Duffy’s fanbase. September of 2013, Duffy debuted her first original song “Hello”, gaining even more attention, even by newsletters, describing the very explicit song as “a vulgar, yet clever approach to haters.”
After many months of new music and new attention, Duffy was asked to open up for pop gypsy artist Neon Hitch on the closing night of Hitch’s “The Yard Sale Tour” in Boston, whose performance took place November 19th at the Middle East (Upstairs) club located in Cambridge MA. She has also opened up for local artists, such as Travis Ransom and Scotty Pope. In 2017, Duffy toured the state with local artists Nick Cincotta and Rapta on Luv The Plug tour with Revolutionary Music Group.
On July 25, 2016, Duffy released her debut extended play Blue Skies//White Lights on all digital distributors.
In 2017, Duffy independently released a five – track extended play Travel Fever on SoundCloud. Her debut mixtape Rewind with the hit song “California” featuring Scotty Pope was released October 14th, 2017.
Has it been a smooth road?
In high school, lots of people didn’t take me seriously. I would nasty comments on my videos and on social media. It wasn’t until my junior year people started asking for tickets to my shows and I didn’t get as much hate, but this isn’t an easy road and hate comes with the job. It’s all about believing in yourself and not letting anyone stop you because, in the end, it’s all about what makes you happy.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a pop/hip-hop singer, rapper, musician and songwriter. I’ve always just loved music and performing. Being a female rapper is definitely interesting, but I find it pretty cool and unique, and being able to fuse the pop and hip-hop genres is a fun thing to experiment with. We need more girl rappers.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Boston is an incredible place to start a music career. The scene is great and diverse and there’s so many resources out there to get you started. We have so many promoters and venues and studios willing to work with any artist. There are also some great local festivals, especially in the summertime.
