Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Abrams.
Gary, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started in the jewelry industry at age 14, while in high school, working in a small retail store in downtown Boston. After 1 year of college I started an apprenticeship that lasted 7 years. I learned many of the skills I still use today like sizing rings, making and repairing all kinds of jewelry and also the basics of running a small business. In 1987 I started my own wholesale business, servicing retail jewelry stores by manufacturing jewelry and doing their repairs as well. Not long after I started selling to retail customers too.
In 1999 I moved my business to Randolph Mass. to focus more on retail and also to spend more time with my young son.
I still run my small store on North Main Street, doing all the jewelry work here in house as well as watch repairs and much more. I carry a good variety of merchandise and focus on making custom pieces for my clients.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s never a smooth path running a small “mom and pop “type establishment. There’s the economy, competition, advertising and so many other obstacles.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about A Jewelers Workshop – what should we know?
I’d have to say my store focus is on customer service. Most of my customers come here for a unique, hand-made, one of a kind piece of jewelry. But I also do many repairs on all kinds of jewelry along with watch repairs and batteries, appraisals and pretty much anything having to do with jewelry. My inventory not only consists of my own designs but a good variety of 14k, 18k, Silver and Platinum.
What sets me apart from most other jewelry stores is that I do all jewelry work right here on the premises and most often when a client comes in they are talking to the owner!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Everyone has family and friends that support them on their journey in life and business. I would say that in my case, I give the most of the credit to myself for sticking to my game plan and business model.
