Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabby Queenan.
Gabby, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I joined the Mass Rivers staff in 2016. My first exposure to river advocacy occurred during my independent research project in Panama where I witnessed firsthand the conflict between native populations and the government over large-scale hydropower investments. Since then, I served as an environmental educator with the Ecology School in Saco, Maine, where I taught students basic watershed science curricula. After my time in Maine, I conducted policy research for the Environmental League of Massachusetts, covering many state focused environmental issues that included advocacy for the state environmental budget. As an undergraduate at Macalester College, I earned a degree in Environmental Studies and Political Science. I am a lifelong Massachusetts resident and I currently live in the Mystic River Watershed.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Massachusetts Rivers Alliance – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The Massachusetts Rivers Alliance was incorporated in 2007 and acquired its first staff in June 2009. Mass Rivers’ mission is to protect and restore rivers across the Commonwealth. A related goal for us is to strengthen, connect, and empower individuals and organizations working to protect rivers in our state. The organization works to improve river policies in four areas: water quality, streamflow, wildlife habitat, and investments in green infrastructure. In just ten years, Mass Rivers has grown quickly and now has 69 organizational members and three staff. The Massachusetts Rivers Alliance is the voice for rivers in Massachusetts and maintains a strong presence with both the state administration and the legislature.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
We love living in Cambridge! There is a great community of non-profits in the area, excellent public transportation and amazing restaurants all within easy reach. The only aspect we would want to change is the traffic which can create an unpleasant atmosphere during rush hour.
