Today we’d like to introduce you to Fred Mudge.
Fred is a Bruins fan, motorcycle rider, vegetarian, and registered piano technician, in that order. He grew up in Brookline, Massachusetts with an older brother and younger sister. Growing up, he taught himself how to play the guitar and piano and he sang for the Boston Opera Company.
In high school, Fred spent his time with the drama club and working as a singing telegram, delivering balloons and gifts to sick children, adults, birthday parties and other special events. He attended Berklee College of Music in 1988 where he pursued a career in musical theater at first, but later changed his career path toward his love for pianos.
Yamaha Corporation of America began training him to become a piano technician in 1992. Throughout his training he worked with some of the world’s best piano technicians: Terri Nimi, Yoshi Suzuki, and eventually, one on one training with Nori Soga at a concert artist’s service seminar in 2001.
Since the birth of Fred’s Piano Service in 1995, Fred has been busy attending seminars and workshops to fine-tune his existing skills and to learn new ways of becoming a better technician.
In 2013, he finished his training as a Concert Artist Technician for Steinway & Sons.
Today, Fred is highly regarded in the music industry and regularly works for artists such as Tony Bennett, Harry Connick Jr., Danilo Perez, Norah Jones, James Taylor, Chick Corea, and many others. Fred currently lives in Boston with his wife and four children.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Building a business is very hard work. There are challenges every day and that keeps it interesting.
Fred’s Piano Service – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am grateful to have the opportunity to continue building a piano tuning/service business and maintain a diverse clientele.
We are trying to set new standards for rapid response emergency service calls. Providing concert tuning, service, sales and the rebuilding of quality vintage instruments and ensure customer satisfaction with personal and detailed attention.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success by the happiness of my family, growth of our knowledge and the wealth of faithful clients we have.
