Thanks for sharing your story with us Erin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up very close with my grandparents, in college my grandfather suffered from advanced Alzheimer’s Disease and my grandmother physically declined to care for him at home. After a “crisis” he was placed in an Assisted Living Community while she declined in a skilled nursing facility.
I ventured into elder care in my early 20s as a hospice volunteer. From there I went to work for a large senior living provider and I’ve spent the past 14yrs as an Elder Care Specialist here in MA helping seniors and their families find the best options available to meet their needs. There was a similar pain point most of my clients experienced. The process of leaving the longtime family home can be extremely overwhelming both emotionally and physically.
Couple this with an unexpected decline either cognitive or physical and it’s enough to halt most families in their tracks. Also, many seniors in the Boston area need to use the equity in their home to afford their next step. Elder care communities can cost on average $5-$10,000 per month and that doesn’t include the “buy-in” options in the area. There are numerous professionals needed to ensure a smooth transition from home including and having to contract with and pay each individually complicates the process. I created Dovetail to streamline all of the services needed to transition from home under one roof to ensure a seamless transition from home.
The consumer works with me and my team and we coordinate with each provider and manage the process from start to finish. The services also include selling the home once the senior has moved and the contents have been dealt with along with providing short-term bridge loans to cover the expense at the community while waiting for the home to sell. All of our services can be paid upon the closing of the property to ease the financial burden someone may be facing in the time of crisis.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Yes! I have worked with all of my subcontractors/team members for years prior to starting this business and it’s been a pleasure to work with them all under one roof. The professionals I’ve worked with in the past have embraced our concept and we’ve been able to help many, many families in need.

I would’ve done it sooner. I knew the struggles my clients were dealing with for years and I didn’t think to provide the resources in a streamlined way prior. Everything happens when it’s supposed to I guess!
