Meet Erik Koeppel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erik Koeppel.

Erik, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Early in my career as a fine artist I was drawn to the American landscape as a subject for my paintings. As I began to draw and paint our beautiful natural landmarks, I became increasingly aware of brilliant 19th century paintings of the same subjects. I was so impressed with the quality of this historical artwork, and spent years trying to understand the methods and philosophy behind them. These discoveries were incorporated into my own working method and mode of depicting nature in a way that reflects out deeper human experience of it. As my work began to be recognized and collected nationally, I was asked to publish a series of instructional DVDs on the Techniques of the Hudson River School Masters (the “Hudson River School” is a broader term for the phase of 19th C. American painting that I’m predominantly interested in.) These popular instructional videos sold widely, and increased awareness of my work amongst my peers, and in academic circles, and I’ve been lecturing and exhibiting broadly across the country, with gallery representatives in Boston, New York City, Chicago, Naples FL, and several places in New Hampshire and Maine. I now keep my studio in Jackson, NH in the White Mountains, and also travel a lot painting wherever I go. I feel blessed with how well my work has been received.

Has it been a smooth road?
When I was a starving artist living outside of New York City in Jersey City (all I could afford, to have room to paint, and not in the hip part of Jersey City, the rough part.) I definitely felt well deprived of the wonderful feeling I get when I spend peaceful time in nature. I do think that returning to a rural setting having that experience may have magnified my sentiment toward the beauty of natural subjects.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Erik Koeppel – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I hope that the quality of my work speaks for itself. I set out to make landscape paintings that speak to the human soul. There are many paths to this goal, but I’m proud to say that I’ve honestly pursued the path that speaks most deeply to me, and I’m very happy that I’ve found patrons that agree with me.
