Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Magers.
So, before we jump into specific questions about Seaside Sustainability, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I taught high school Science for many years and found myself wanting to connect more and more people of all ages especially our youth) to the natural world. To do this, I had to go beyond the classroom. So, I created Seaside Sustainability to provide fun and engaging hands-on learning opportunities that focus on protecting waterways, ecosystems, and marine life through knowledge, responsible involvement, and sustainability. This past year alone, 350 school-aged children participated in our adventure and education programs, 78 high school and college students served as marine science interns, and more than 65 people of all ages volunteered their time and energy to our sustainability efforts. As Seaside Sustainability grows, we will build on these numbers exponentially, influencing the future positively with sustainability-minded young and old people alike who love the natural world, recognize their connection to it, and act to protect it.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Having a personal and professional history of supporting others in their endeavors have made the journey less rocky. “Paying it forward” is coming full circle for our expanding team at Seaside Sustainability. As with any new, ambitious undertaking, we have had our share of growing pains but we continue to learn from them, gleaning nuggets from every failure and success. The outstanding, generous support of so many in the local and greater community has made this journey all the more rewarding.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Seaside Sustainability story. What else should we know?
What drives us every day at Seaside is the desire to connect more and more young people to the environment and to create a lasting culture of sustainability in our communities. Our proudest, core achievements at Seaside include creating involved, far-reaching internships in marine sciences for high school and college students, providing environmental consulting to schools, businesses, and local governments, and creating the soon-to-be-launched National STEM Honor Society.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Seaside Sustainability has always embraced collaboration and cooperation as essential to our success. Stewardship and partnership are key terms in our vernacular. Our inclusive approach brings us the best of luck, as others share our vision of protecting the environment and are eager and ready to join us in our efforts.
