Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Hung.
Velocity Martial Arts & Fitness began as a collaborative one source martial arts and fitness center designed to provide the highest quality programs to today’s busy families and professionals. Velocity offers a large gambit of programs for children and adults both on and offsite which include Sport Karate, Kenpo, Wing Chun Kung Fu, Capoeira, Cardio Kickboxing, OCR (obstacle course racing), Yoga, Ballet, and Dance Fitness.
Velocity commits a large amount of time to researching new fitness trends, renowned martial arts programs, and new business practices to meet the ever-changing needs of today’s families and working professionals. Velocity has evolved through research performed in New York and Paris to improve service offerings bringing the newest and best martial arts and fitness programs to the Boston area.
Velocity has built teams from the best programs in New England with some of the best instructors in Metro-Boston. Some of these premier programs include but are not limited to the Seishin Sport Karate Program which has produced State, National, and World Champions each year since 2002; this program has produced instructors and students who have been featured on ESPN, MTV, the Discovery Channel, and many other notable programs. The Velocity Wing Chun Program is another premier offering which is designed by Adrian Li, an acclaimed fighter in the styles of Wing Chun, Jeet Kune Do, Muay Thai, and Karate. His classical training in Kung Fu is from Hong Kong with one of Bruce Lee’s grand student’s.
In late 2015 Velocity began offering programs to community based organizations such as WCCC (Wellesley Community Children’s Center), and The West Suburban YMCA in Newton. Simultaneous to these community offerings our affiliate programs provided their services to The Rivers School Day Camp in Weston, Veritas Academy in Wayland, and North Eastern University. Shortly after, Velocity developed specialized teams of Offsite Program Instructors and broadened program offerings to other Boston Area Schools, Fitness Centers, Universities, Corporate Wellness Centers, and Community Programs.
Through Velocity’s success with these specialized instructor teams Velocity in late 2016 began combining the skills and qualities of these instructors and programs to build custom programs for public and private organizations looking to offer their clients a unique fitness experience. One example of this is our “Core Fitness Program” which we specially designed and instructed in for Beaver Country Day School in Chestnut Hill. Velocity also performs consulting work for Fitness Center’s and Corporate Wellness Centers looking to create, develop, and broaden their offerings.
Though Velocity Martial Arts & Fitness is headquartered in South Natick Velocity Programs are offered throughout the Boston area with new programs scheduled to begin this summer and fall of 2017. Through Velocity’s newest expansion in Chestnut Hill and Brookline we will be offering a FREE Summer Time Series of martial arts classes outside at the parks through Brookline’s Park & Recreation Department.
Velocity is always looking for ways to improve itself in order to continue to provide the best to Boston. Currently, at the South Natick Center Velocity is adding Brazilian Juijitsu to its many offerings.
One of the most anticipated new programs is Velocity OCR (Obstacle Course Racing), currently offered through officiate programing. This specialized training program is designed to help clients develop the skills to participate in Spartan Races or just have a great time getting in shape with a fun new fitness alternative to running on the treadmill or taking convention studio classes. Velocity is currently building instructor teams of Premier Spartan SGX Coaches to offer Official Spartan Training for this fall 2017.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Velocity did have some hiccups along the road to success mostly coordinating all of its many programs and instructors as many of the programs operate with near autonomy while others do not. In 2016 Velocity asked Eric Hung the owner and principle officer of Seishin Martial Arts/Sport Karate to become its Program Management Director. In this role Eric oversees all of these moving parts and assists in new business development for Velocity as wells as instructing in some of his Seishin Sport Karate classes. In return Velocity provides Seishin Sport Karate with first choice in scheduling and studio assignments at the South Natick Center.
Since the establishment of the Program Management Director Velocity has overcome these obstacles and grown, expanding out of Metro-West and into Metro-Boston. Velocity has plans to further build and expand on its success with its direct and affiliate programs. Currently under development are plans to expand its offsite program offerings and consulting work out of state, and a new affiliate satellite fitness center in Hong Kong scheduled to open in 2019.
Velocity Martial Arts & Fitness – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Velocity Martial Arts & Fitness is the first to combine a wide array of offerings for the whole family all at one convenient location in its boutique styled multi studio South Natick Center. Velocity Martial Arts & Fitness is also unique in many other respects which include but are not limited to the pooling of the best programs and instructional staff in New England such as Eric Hung’s Seishin Sport Karate, Rocky DiRico’s Kenpo, and Adrian Li’s Wing Chun Kung Fu along with countless other top instructors and programs.
Velocity is the first and only company to offer other organizations whether public or private it’s teams of specialized instructors and consultants. Velocity is also the first to combine its martial arts and fitness programs in order to be able to customize programs for other businesses and organizations.
In addition to Velocity’s business successes the company takes much pride in its work with the communities it does business in such as Newton’s West Suburban YMCA, and the upcoming free summertime series with Brookline’s Park and Recreation Department.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Personally, it’s hard for me to choose a proudest moment in my career having been a student of the martial arts for 35 years training with many renowned instructors from Joe Greenhalgh, Jason Delucia, and Rocky DiRico to name just a few. I have had the privilege to be a part of Team Straight Up one of the premier professional sport karate teams of the 2000’s where I won countless awards, trophies, State, and National Championships along with a World Title in the Naska pro karate circuit and an induction into the Krane Ratings International Hall of Fame.
If I had to choose a proudest moment in my career I guess I would have to say I have two. The first being the day my daughter (age7) began training in karate with me, and the other being the promotion of my General Manager of Seishin Martial Arts/Sport Karate to Chief Operating Officer. Tim Pettepit has been a student, employee and friend of mine for nearly 20 years. He started training as a child and I had the privilege to promote him to his black belt and train him to become an instructor. Tim has developed overtime to become a phenomenal driving force behind the success of Seishin Martial Arts/ Sport Karate and recently received the promotion to COO in 2016.
It is very rewarding for me to see my students develop and grow over time, but being able to see Tim accomplish what he has is the most rewarding moment of my career. I hope to one day see my daughter attain the same level of accomplishment Tim has in whatever profession she chooses.
