Meet Emily Gallardo of GallardoWorks in South End

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Gallardo.

Emily, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started off as an art director in advertising. In 2003 I started GallardoWorks — a multidisciplinary art studio. Initially, I handmade greeting cards to sell to shops and boutiques. I evolved into designing invitations and doing calligraphy and lettering.

Has it been a smooth road?
As an artist and designer working on my own, even when everything is going great, I always have a gnawing worry about where the next job/client is going to come from. When things are slow I have to remind myself that it will get busy and I need to take care of projects that don’t get dealt with when I’m busy — like website updates, sorting and organization of samples and supplies, etc.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m known for meticulous care in designing and producing invitations and calligraphy. When clients come to me, they are looking to create something that is one-of-a-kind and requires a lot of work by hand. My calligraphy embodies the joy and spontaneity of the human touch. In addition, I also teach classes in calligraphy.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
The South End is a great place for my business. I get quite a bit of business from people in my neighborhood. I would definitely recommend Boston to someone who is just starting out.
