Meet Elizabeth Solaka of Solaka Photography in North Shore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Solaka.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was working as Marketing Specialist at the ICA Boston fresh out of college and I was inspired by the contemporary art installations, sculptures and films. So, I took my first photo class at the the Boston Architectural College. Soon after, I purchased a very special camera and my love for photography took off. It was a vintage Hasselblad. Everything about it is magical: holding the camera, releasing the shutter, hearing the sound of the picture being taken, advancing the film, processing it and seeing these almost three dimensional images, sharp but soft at the same time. This camera went to the moon on the Apollo mission, which in my view is why the pictures we see from there are so special. My clients appreciate the supreme quality that my camera offers as well as my photo skills and easy presence. I still use this camera and always will.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When digital photography came about, the colors were horrible and basically the whole technology was full of flaws. My Hasselblad broke and it was hard to find someone who could find the old parts to fix it. I bought a digital camera and basically slumped into a major depression, thinking I had to work with these sub-par tools forever. Then two good things happened: 1. Eventually technology improved and digital pictures are now amazing, even on the phones; 2. I still love my film camera and traditional analog photo technology. There’s a film revolution and now, people are even making parts for old cameras! When I realized this and found my niche, the road got much smoother!

Solaka Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I develop interpersonal relationships with subjects, connecting with people and creating environmental portraiture. I also specialize in a variety of photos and paintings that I sell. Also, I make short films from stop action images I create, collaborating with make up artists, stylists, musicians and more.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I’m proud whenever I get to share my work with others. I try to exhibit my art twice per year. There’s no specific moment, just those thousands of moments where I touch people’s hearts — whether it’s through art-making or making pictures for individuals that they treasure.
