Today we’d like to introduce you to Eleni Vidalis.
Eleni, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
A weekly, bilingual program airing “live” on Mondays from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM on the Boston Neighborhood Network, BNNLive on Channel 9 or 15 in the City of Boston and a section of Brookline. The program is also aired in Chelmsford on Saturdays on Channel 8 at 6 PM, in Watertown on Tuesdays at 3 PM, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10 PM on Channel 9 and in Lynn, Swampscott and Salem on Tuesdays at 6 PM.
Eleni Vidalis on a volunteer basis, hosts, produces and directs The Greek Program and has long been active in Greater Boston’s Greek community. Eleni is an active community leader, member of the Mayor’s Greek Committee, serve as Greek Independence Day Parade announcer, Past Parish Council President of Saint John’s Greek Orthodox Church in the South End of Boston, is the President of the Federation of Hellenic American Societies of New England and supports Greek events throughout New England.
Eleni and her husband Kosta are the proud parents of three children; Kyriacoula, Nikolas and Mariaangelica. After 10 years serving as co-host and co-producer with Eleni on The Greek Program, Alex Geourntas decided to step down from the anchor desk. In late 2006, Eleni was joined at the desk by Thanasis Haberis. Thanasi is a well-known businessman and a resident of West Roxbury. Thanasi is also one of the founding members of Journey to Ithaca band. Thanasi and his wife Amy are the proud parents of Eleni.
The program was created to promote Hellenic culture and heritage, present information on city, state and federal government services, announce community events, invite guests to discuss issues important to residents, showcase young Hellenes (the next generation) and of course, Greek music.
Now in its twenty-fourth year on BNN, The Greek Program has been recognized by Greater Boston’s print media and they include “Hellenism gets boost from community radio and TV” by Joanna James, The Hellenic Voice, June 2003; “Kalosorisate sto Elliniko Programa!” by Judy Vance, The BNN Connection Quarterly Newsletter, Spring 2003; “BNN’s Greek TV Program Celebrates 5 Years” by Greek America Magazine’s Greek Boston Edition, May 2001; “Big time on the small screen” by Dorie Clark, The Boston Phoenix, June 2001 and “Roslindale a hub for Greek artists” by Gary Duehr, West Roxbury Transcript, August 1999.
The Greek Program is the longest running program on BNN TV and is currently the only LIVE Greek television program in the United States. In 2012, The Greek Program greatly expanded its viewership by having the program stream live on bnntv.org as well as GreekBoston.com. Currently, The Greek Program is being watched worldwide, reaching over 198,000 households weekly. The Greek Program continues to provide quality informational, informative and entertaining programming.
