Meet Elaine Stern of Gratefuldog in Roslindale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elaine Stern.

Elaine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I found myself struggling with my art (career) in my 20’s. I remember sitting in a puppy kindergarten class with my first Gordon Setter and watching the instructor, thinking – that’s exactly what I want to do. I had never had such a strong, clear, feeling about anything before.

I did a long internship for pet dog training. I became obsessed with competitive training and spent years competing, and wining with my Gordon’s.

Teaching groups had an energy that I enjoyed. It was amazing to see a dog transform in 7 weeks, but often folks were struggling with behaviors at home, that we were unable to address in groups. I decided to stop teaching groups and work privately.

I thrive on the connection I’m able to harness one on one with dogs. It’s incredibly gratifying.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Teaching groups allowed me to get my name out, but it wasn’t lucrative, and I was unable to give clients my full attention, (I was spread thin). I stopped teaching groups 8 years ago and that allowed me to brand myself and really give it my all.

Gratefuldog – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Gratefuldog is a private dog training company. I specialize in providing clients with a customized dog training service. I offer puppy kindergarten, beginner obedience, intermediate, advanced training, therapy dog prep and many other services.

I am most proud of my long term relationships with families and their dogs. My experience and commitment set me far apart from most trainers.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
When a client sees their dog, in a new or enhanced light. That’s success!
