Today we’d like to introduce you to Edward Lee.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Edward. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I graduated from Medford High School and went to Middlesex Community College for a Criminal Justice degree. Right out of high school I thought I wanted to become a police officer as a lot of my family members are police officers. I figured out pretty quickly that college really wasn’t for me. After talking with a friend of mine I decided to get into a trade because I always enjoyed working with my hands. My grandfather was a man that could do anything with his hands and I grew up idolizing him as well as my father (two of the hardest workers I’ll ever know).
In 2004, I opened the phone book and started calling electrical companies and simply asking if they are hiring. As I was doing that, I was working two jobs (outside of the electrical field) and taking a basic electrical class at Petersons Trade School. I got my first job with a small company which gave me some great experience. Then had an opportunity to work for a larger company out of Medford that would give me more opportunity to grow my career. I eventually got my license and became a foreman as I was never the type of person that liked taking orders from people (I prefer to give the orders haha). While I was in the process of getting my license, going to school and working a couple of jobs I was also training/competing in mixed martial arts. Mixed martial arts has always been a passion of mine but unfortunately life happens and I no longer compete.
At some point along the way I decided I could do this electrical thing on my own since I was already running crews of 4 to 6 guys. I then made the decision to go on my own and the rest is history. A few other important milestones happened along the way… I became a local firefighter, got married, got a dog and became a father. Life is good.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In Massachusetts it takes at least four years of working hours to be eligible for the test to get your electrical license. Four years of schooling and of working hours, I wouldn’t say it was an easy road but I can’t say it was a terribly difficult road either. It’s just a lot of work but I’ve always been a worker. I’ve always had more than one job. Add in competing in mixed martial arts (which the training alone is a job!) can make time management a challenge to say the least. The road to owning a business was a lot of work and a lot of studying but well worth it. I love my job(s).
Please tell us about Edward J Lee Jr LLC – Electrician.
I am a licensed electrician in the state of Massachusetts. We do anything and everything when it comes to electrical work; from new service upgrades to panel changes, adding devices such as outlets and switches, recessed lighting and any other lighting, we also do TV mountings, and full kitchen and bathroom renovations are also a big part of the work we do. What sets us apart is our dedication to being neat and cleanly during and after job ends. If you ask anybody that has ever worked for me, I am meticulous with my work. We clean up after ourselves, our wiring is neat, everything is level and we take the extra time to make sure our work is as perfect as it can be.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Hindsight is always 20/20 but if I had to choose anything differently I would have gone into a vocational school in high school (not a trade school after high school) and I would have started my business sooner!
