Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Susan Yavner.
Dr. Yavner – please share your story with us.
Yavner Dental Associates started when Dr Murray opened a small dental practice in Medford. He had always known that he wanted to become a dentist and he came from a long line of dentists including Benjamin Franklin Yavner, a Somerville dentist. Several years later, he expanded his practice and moved to a medical/dental building in Medford Square. He practiced from 9 AM to 9 PM, 6 days a week. His two daughters, Debra and Susan (myself) worked there every vacation/summer and evenings, first cleaning shelves at a nickel per shelf and over time, learning to assist him in patient care and in office management. I joined the practice after graduating from Harvard Dental School and MIT. The practice continued to expand so we moved to a new more modern facility in Medford Square. Since then, Debra has joined the practice as the office manager and dental assistant.
Yavner Dental Associates has always been a family dental business. For many years, Ruth, Dr Murray’s wife and my mother, was the office manager/front desk receptionist. Now it is Dr Murray’s grandchildren who work in the office as dental assistants and receptionists on weekends and vacations. We are a family team in our practice and our approach. We have seen multiple generations of patients, we love taking care of entire families, from one to 99 years of age, and we care for everyone.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In any practice, there are always bumps in the road. The biggest bump was probably the loss of Ruth. Without her smiling face at the front desk, we lost some of our upbeat energy for a while. Luckily we found Betty, a registered nurse who also loves working with people and finding a way to solve their problems, be it a scheduling conflict or an insurance dilemma. The second bump was when Dr Susan had her twin boys. As a dentist, she only took two weeks maternity leave, so when necessary she had to bring the boys in to work with her, especially on Saturdays. But the patients were wonderful and some would even stay past their appointments to play with the boys. Even now, when patients ask about the boys, there are always pictures and art work ready to display.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Yavner Dental Associates – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Yavner Dental Associates is a general dental practice. We pride ourselves on being friendly, accommodating and non-intimidating. We do most phases of dentistry including; checkups, cleanings, restorations, dentures, crowns and bridges and teeth whitening. We are now offering night guard and sports guards made in our own lab. We take a family approach to treating people’s dental needs. We care and we try our best to take care of all our patients’ dental needs.
I have been very lucky and there have been many proud moments. Usually the worse someone’s teeth are, the greater the pleasure I receive in restoring them. When people who have poor teeth come into our office afraid to smile and then leave our office with a new smile, (some even cry), that is when I am the proudest of the patient and of our staff. We can change lives. Another small and proud moment was when a mother motioned me over and told me that her nine year old daughter who never liked to read, took home a book from our free book box at her last appointment and loved it so much that she is now reading all the books from the series. How great is that! Recently a newly married couple came in and the husband told me that his bride had thanked me at the ceremony for her beautiful smile
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Looking to the future, hopefully the next generation, Dr Murray’s grandchildren will carry on the family tradition and continue to provide the best in dental care to our patients.
