Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Clifton Georgaklis.
Dr. Georgaklis, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Six Month Braces evolved when in 1991 I started noticing that there were many adults who wanted straight front teeth but didn’t have any bite or profile problems which require more time to fully correct. I pioneered existent modalities such as sanding in between the teeth and extracting a lower incisor, taking them further than had been done before. Patients were very happy and the results were great. Now it has been utilized by thousands of dentists and spread throughout the US and Europe.
After 26 years I am fully confident that I can straighten 90% of crowded patients’ teeth in about 6 months and apply fixed invisible retainers behind the teeth so they look great decades later! I have incorporated other modalities such as gum and tooth reshaping which augments the final result. Nearly everyone can leave out office with a Hollywood smile, there is no excuse not to!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When a new concept is introduced it has been said, first it is met with skepticism before it is embraced. And eventually other claim it was their idea. This is what has happened with 6 month braces. Orthodontists who are traditional were not quick to accept this Rapidbraces concept until Invisalign came along around 1999. Then it suddenly gained credibility to straighten just the front teeth without changing the bite, because they put a lot of money behind the concept, so that made it more familiar to professionals and the public alike.
Now everyone is practicing this, but it feels good to have originated, wrote about it in journals, and lectured on it before anyone else. I knew eventually someone would think of it so I thought it best to publish it which I finally did in 1999 in Dentistry Today which is a monthly publication nearly every dentist in the US reads. I knew because of the difficulty doing it that many would not be able to so I wasn’t too worried about copycats. Now I have advance the concept to include gum and tooth recontouring to such an extent that I feel I can deliver a very high quality result in 6 months in nearly every patient which gives me a lot of pride.

We have a boutique dental practice focusing on adult 6 month esthetic orthodontics, and adjunctive services. When you do anything a lot for decades you get very good at it. When a patient walks in for a consult, before they have fully opened their mouth I often know how I will treat them and how I will proceed. There are very few surprises at this stage, and I know what I deliver will be a great product that will keep them smiling for life. It feels good to change someone’s life so quickly.
We bond with our patients as this is an exciting transformation. It’s great to be a part of this journey. We are not a factory, and cosmetic dentistry has become so profitable that many start doing it solely for the money which is too bad, as it is so transformative and exciting and so much more than money. We change self-images and lives.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Making more fantastic smiles. Time to time an unusual case comes along that is something really different, like the 27 year old girl who came in a few months ago with an extra tooth, up and IN BETWEEN her two front teeth. She was from the South and didn’t grow up with a lot of money so her family could never do anything about it, but now she had saved and was ready. It was fun to see her and suddenly the caterpillar turned into a butterfly. Fun!
