Meet Dino Rossi of NE Preferred Properties DBA RE/MAX Preferred Properties in Newton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dino Rossi.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always been an entrepreneur. It started around the age of 10 as a paperboy delivering newspapers in the morning and afternoon in a small village in Newton called Nonantum. Nonantum was made up of mostly Italians and immigrants coming to this country for a better life. I came from a family of 5 living in a small 6 room cape with one full bath. How did we manage? One bathroom!! Imagine that!!! Sharing a bedroom with a sibling.

Around that same age of 10, I became a shoe shine expert in all the local pubs. Imagine today parents allowing their kids to shoe shine in local pubs? People would throw money at us kids and loved hiring us to shine their shoes or the long-legged booted women as that was the style in the early 70’s. Making money was fun and pretty easy for me. I loved when my Dad would have a bunch of raffle tickets he was obligated to buy if he did not sell them. I would grab them and within an hour come back with them all sold and his financial responsibility gone lol. I then got into going to a local club known a the Newton Boys Club. I was quite intimidated walking into this place but a man named Sam Crocetti greeted me at the door and quickly got me involved with joining other boys in such games as billiards, basketball, hockey, bombardment, ping pong, bowling, rifle shooting, arts & crafts and more!

The Newton Boys Club soon became my new home. I use to live just behind the club. I would cut through a neighbors yard to get there. It was a place that was designed to get the kids off the street and into a protected atmosphere. This is .where I was offered my own 1st business. I negotiated with the director of the club that I would run the front counter and in exchange, I could sell candy and keep the profits. I quickly figured out how to purchase mass quantities of items for one price and sell them individually and making quite the profit. I stayed active with The Boys Club till I was about 14. I was able to achieve an award that was often awarded to a child in their final year at the club except I was the youngest recipient at only 12 years old. The award was known as The BOY OF THE YEAR!!! This award was based on a bunch of things. You had to be a good person. Helping and volunteering in the community. Being a well-rounded athlete with good sportsmanship and a willingness to always help and be involved.

After leaving The Club I began working as much a possible in local businesses till I made enough to buy my 1st car. I then used this car to get back and forth to work. I was elected Senior Class president in High School. I was never a wonderful student as I would daydream often about getting out of school and going to work! After graduating from high school I went off to technical school and became a computer technician. I worked a couple technical jobs till I was hired by Raytheon. I enjoyed working there till my parents decided to open a restaurant in New Hampshire and me feeling guilty I left Raytheon to join and protect my parents with this new venture.

We opened this restaurant in June of 1983 and this restaurant is still operated by my Mom!! When we opened the restaurant I decided to make a investment in real estate. After going through the process of buying a home at 22 years old I decided I really enjoyed the process I went through and decided to get my real estate license. I had always looked at some of my families wealthy friends and asked how did they do so well financially and I was told, they own lots of real estates! This is when I decided that I wanted to own lots of real estates. I got my real estate license in 1985 and quickly became a top agent in my office. The 1st day at the office I decided to buy my 2nd property. I then began buyer and fixing homes up and selling them at great profits! I soon realized I was onto something good!!

In 1992 I married my wonderful wife Cinzia who migrated to this country from Italy. We moved away from the restaurant and back to Newton Massachusetts where I got into the real estate business. I began buyer properties in Newton as an investment. Some properties I purchased I then tore down and rebuilt new homes. I could go on and on about the real estate and the investments I made along the way but you can ask me about that later. I have owned New England Preferred Properties for the past 20 Years and beginning December 15, 2017, we will become RE/MAX Preferred Properties!!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would say that the biggest obstacles have been getting lenders and bankers to believe in you and lend you the money to invest.

I became a real estate agent in 1985 and opened my own company in 1997 known as New England Preferred Properties. I have operated this company for the past 20 years and beginning Dec 15, 2017, will be known as RE/MAX Preferred Properties

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I came from a very poor family who migrated here from Italy. We had very little but we had one another and a very fun family.

Success to me is being happy with what you are doing. Work to me is not work. It’s fun! I make money doing fun stuff helping young families buy homes and sell homes.
