Today we’d like to introduce you to Dimitris Savalas.
Dimitris, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When as young as 12 yards old, your teacher is asking you to draw on the blackboard the Christmas theme so all kids can tell why we celebrate Christmas your parents know something is going on with you.
This is what happened to me and at age 18 entered one of the most famous Fine Art Schools in Europe Doxiadis fine Art School in Athens Greece.
All along at age 14 had my first job as graphic artist and photographer at a local small business in Athens Greece where I was born.
Expressing myself through visual solutions that were used to communicate a message to the public was part of my life then and still is to this day.
The pleasure and mental high you get by starting any project from scratch and challenging yourself to do better than the previous time is a huge high.
Regarding education after Doxiadis school next came a two-year study at Fine Art School of Lausanne Switzerland where precision and timely production is an art by itself for the Swiss people.
In 1972, landed in Buffalo NY on a Friday and the following Monday I was working at one of the largest Advertising agencies of Buffalo, Stahlka and Faller. It was then that I realized how much I hated the fact that the executives of the agency will come and throw at you another project ad campaign, brochure, logo etc asking you to do the best you can.
You see that is fine but communicating a message that can bring results can’t be just pretty, it has to have a bone to it and our days even more as the marketing evolution has gone to so many directions.
Therefore 2 more years of school at Buffalo University for an associate degree in Marketing and Business administration gave me a better understanding of creating and why to go one direction or another.
After many awards and recognition time was right to go back to Greece in 1986 where I started my own advertising agency, clients like THAI Airways, 3M, SHARP office Automation, Lowenbrau beer, Alliance Insurance, ROCHE Pharmaceuticals etc were clients that we produced results for while collecting awards such as CLIO and other local awards in Greece.
Returning to Boston in 1994 has been a new chapter not only obtaining back customers I left in 1986 and who were happy to see me back but with the new era of computers that changed everything from film to digital, from airbrush to Photoshop etc.
That change as dramatic and fundamental as it has been it also changed the market.
Almost everyone can look creative these days. Website design to video production and editing is what today I love to work with as those two seem to enhance another.
Social media, of course, a huge vehicle but photography, drone use and video production is what feeds my creative brain these days.
It is almost funny when you ask young photographers if they know what chrome is and they look at you if you are from the moon, creating layouts with magic markers and radiographs were what real Art Directors and creative people were working with compare to ready templates and aided applications to make you look good today.
Still through all that the pleasures of creating even with the digital evolution is still high. Some of my latest projects are a brand new website for the largest indoor Sports Arena north of Boston in Danvers for which I photograph all sports activities, produced a complicated video with 3 cameras, edited and after 4 months client and friend Kelly Gragg is very happy with the results. www.danversindoorsports.com
In my site www.creativemodus.com (with a new name as Dimitris Creative INTEGRATED MARKETING), you can see most of my recent work.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Never smooth road, clients not paying or clients that will not communicate with me the right way have been the struggles. Vendors can also be a problem and I did have some of them.
