Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Stelin.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have first discovered art as a child as a way to feel empowered. I did not realize this fact up until very recently. However, art has played a huge role in all the major transitions in my life. I moved to the United States with my family from Moldova when I was 13. That was a very hard blow to a teenager. Reconnecting with my inner self through art has shaped my character through this tricky time.
I have changed course in my career, moving from a six-figure salary managing a growing art gallery chain to becoming an entrepreneur. After the birth of my 2nd child, I opened an art school, which is going strong, having received a Best of Boston award in 2016.
To this day, my art practice is my way to stay balanced, to keep myself in check, having honest conversations with my deepest self, and learning to prioritize the myriad of dilemmas in my daily life.
Please tell us about your art.
I create nostalgic landscapes that are conversations between reality and abstraction. I employ a centuries-old technique of encaustic, with a twist. I mix my oil paints with a wax medium and create four to five layers of imagery in every single piece. With my very last layer, I melt the mixture in certain areas with a heating lamp. The result is a landscape, parts of which are dissolved into one other, into a semi-abstraction.
The message behind my work is that we need to spend more time dissolving into our surroundings. We’re so pre-occupied with our daily lives, that we don’t notice that we’re just tiny specks in this gorgeous world.
Collectors who resonate with my work tell me that there’s a light that shines through from within my pieces. Once they install my oils in their homes, they make them relax, exhale and realize that it’s all going to be ok when there’s such beauty on this earth.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Do not be afraid to ask people to buy your art. It does not only have to happen through a gallery. You will be surprised to find that the myth of a starving artist is just a myth.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work is currently hanging at the Cambridge offices of GOOGLE, through the summer of 2018. I’m also participating in Brookline Open Studios, with pieces on display at Brookline Book smith through July, 2018, and at J.P.Licks in Coolidge Corner.
My work is available for purchase right on my website at www.dianastelin.com. I love to bring in my expertise as an art consultant and work with people on finding just the right spot in their home or office for their chosen favorite. I come out for ‘homeshows’ and play around with multiple options until we find the right fit. Pieces can be shipped over as well with a 30-day money back guarantee. Happy to answer any questions!
