Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Lavino.
Denise, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I knew I wanted to be a hair stylist at a very young age. My mother was a hairdresser and we had a salon in the basement. I was her personal assistant. I used to play with my Barbies, giving them haircuts, braids, and many other styles. I pursued the start of my career straight out of high school. I attended LIBS hairdressing school in Malden, MA.
Upon graduating, I landed my first job at Lord’s and Lady’s in Medford, MA, which is part of the Belgrade Group.
After being with Lord’s and Lady’s for 20 years, I was transferred to the James Joseph Salon in Medford, MA, which is also part of the Belgrade Group. After 4 years of being in Medford, I found my final home at the brand new James Joseph Salon at MarketStreet in Lynnfield. It was an incredible opportunity for me to be able to gain new clientele, along with keeping clients that had been with me since Lord’s and Lady’s.
Along the way, I have met so many talented and inspiring stylists that have become mentors to me. The education that has been given to me through this company is unimaginable. It says a lot being with a single company for 26+ years and I am still learning and growing every day!
Has it been a smooth road?
For the most part, yes. However, everything in life has its ups and downs. An ongoing obstacle I have faced has been the challenge of realistic expectations on social media vs. non-realistic. Between, filters, extensions, etc., social media puts these images in our client’s head. We all do our best to achieve the look that they are coming to us with, but we are not magicians!
The industry is constantly changing, so I’m continuously modifying and becoming familiar with new techniques that are trending.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the James Joseph Salon story. Tell us more about the business.
I work for the Belgrade Group, which owns Lord’s and Lady’s, Green Tangerine, Corbu, Mizu, and James Joseph Salons. I’m proud to work for a company that is family owned! They value their employees and are extremely personable.
I specialize in Balayage and precision cutting. I love being able to transform looks for people who are looking for dramatic changes!
What sets me apart from others is my straightforward and honest personality. I’ve also been with the company for many years, it is difficult to find loyal employees in this industry.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Older styles are coming back, but with a modern twist! Shags, mullets, pixies, you name it! We breathe new life into these timeless trends.
