Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Giblin.
Denise, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Upon graduation from high school, I went directly to the corporate world, working in a variety of industries and positions. Ten years later, I decided to continue my education in the theatre arts and music, and received degrees from Dean College and Bridgewater University.
After a few years of auditioning, participating in regional theatre and working temporary positions in the NJ/PA area, I relocated back to MA with my, then, husband and settled in the New Bedford area. I was fortunate enough to join the staff at Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, RI during that time as well as continuing to be active in local community theatre and as a member of the Providence Singers choral group.
I spent the next 6 years at Trinity Rep, where I gained extensive knowledge in group sales, customer service, and theater/box office operations. I also made some long-lasting connections and friendships.
From there, I spent time at the Handel and Haydn Society, Boston; Heritage Museums and Gardens, Sandwich; Plainridge Park Casino, Plainville; honing my group sales and marketing skills to enable me to join the team at Pilgrim Hall Museum, Plymouth, in March 2017, where I currently serve as the Group Tour and Marketing Manager.
I truly enjoy being a part this museum and of the tourism industry in historic Plymouth. As a descendant of three lines of Mayflower Pilgrim families, I couldn’t feel more at home.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not all been smooth sailing, however. Being let go from Trinity Repertory Company in January 2009, at the height of the country’s financial crisis, was like a death experience. It was not only a job; it was family. It took some time for me to transition from that time in my life. There have been many hard transitions since, both personal and professional that have factored in to where I am today.
However, in 2011, two wonderful boys, ages 2 and 4, came into our lives through the MA foster care system and, in 2012, became a permanent part of the family. Their father and I could not be more grateful for them or more proud. Although that has not been an easy road either, it is so worth it.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Pilgrim Hall Museum – what should we know?
The Pilgrim Society, founded in 1820 to preserve Plymouth’s unique history, opened the doors of Pilgrim Hall Museum in 1824. America’s Museum of Pilgrim Possessions has remained the oldest continuously operating public museum in the country.
“The mission of the Pilgrim Society and Pilgrim Hall Museum is to achieve worldwide awareness of the Pilgrims’ significance as an enduring narrative of America’s founding.”
Here, one will find an extraordinary collection of 17th century artifacts; some of which came over on the Mayflower! These artifacts tell the story of early Plymouth Colony.
We offer visitors an opportunity to step back in time as they step through our doors, explore the Pilgrim story as never before, and learn more about the individuals that came together, struggled, sacrificed, and persevered.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
That the primary goal for the work that I do be to make the visitor experience the most worthwhile that it can be.
