Today we’d like to introduce you to David Polansky.
Thanks for sharing your story with us David. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Since junior high school (now middle school) I’d worked in various bands as a trumpet player.
After graduating from the University of Massachusetts in 1967 I worked at various unfulfilling jobs while still playing trumpet “on the side”.
After a couple of years in computer programming, I got married and did about one additional year in computers but hated it. My wife suggested I go back to school and get a music degree. I did that and then began teaching at Berkeley College in Boston. I enjoyed that very much but, at the time, the pay was not enough to support a wife and two young kids. I left and taught public school for three more years before I decided to “go it on my own”. I’ve been self-employed since 1983 and, in addition to the income that I make as a freelance musician, I have written and published a number of children’s albums (first on cassette, then on CDs, then as digital downloads, and streaming) which provide me with additional income.
One of the albums in particular (Animal Alphabet Songs) is used around the world to teach about animals to adults as well as children. At one point the American Museum of Natural History was using it in their education courses and the Parque Oceanique Cousteau in Paris used my songs as background music for its exhibits.
Besides the small venue shows that I do for children, also work in libraries, senior centers, etc. providing program for seniors which I perform on piano, trumpet, and vocal.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not always been smooth but most of the difficulties were simply related to not making enough money.
The “up side” is that most of the clients I’ve worked with have been warm, wonderful people and, most of the time, I’ve worked with inspiring musicians, many of whom have been close friends for a lot of years.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Davidpolansky.com. – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
At this point, most of my music sales are online; either through my website davidpolansky.com or from CDbaby.com, Amazon.com, Apple Itunes and etc. Mostly, but not entirely, children’s music.
Additionally, I am busy presenting concerts (One man shows) for children and adults.
I am known for my expansive repertoire. If I’m at a library with an audience of seniors, I often ask for requests and can usually launch right into whatever song they ask for.
With kids, I keep them glued and perform everything “Live”. Thus, they get to see and hear music that isn’t pre-recorded, canned, etc.
My versatility sets me apart. I’m able to present a lot of different kinds of music on different instruments with some vocal tricks as well. (Louis Armstrong impersonation is the best most people have ever heard).
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Best? Boston is small enough so that navigating it is easy, yet it has lots of cultural diversity that makes it flavorful in so many ways.
Least? Traffic….though it’s a helluva lot better than LA.
