Meet David Fenchel of Traverse Architects in Cambridgeport

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Fenchel.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Having had the privilege of working with amazing, award-winning architecture firms in Boston and Washington DC, I felt well prepared to launch my own practice, Traverse Architects.

Inspired by the New England landscape, whether be an urban park, national forest or seashore, we are always looking for ways to re-engage with the outdoors – visually, physically and emotionally.

The core motivation of our firm is to collaborate with clients and builders that are committed to unique and creative design solutions that are high performing, beautiful and enjoyable places to live, work and play.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have been very fortunate to connect with some wonderful people early on who have helped springboard the firm in its first year. These people have been terrific clients, local builders, and other architects from around the neighborhood. This community of people has helped make the first year in business an amazing and successful experience.

The greatest challenge has been maintaining a sustainable work schedule. There have been weeks, even months where I’ve worked 80+ hours a week – week after week. These are good times, but not a sustainable schedule.

It should also be said that the construction industry in Boston happens to be very busy right now. My primary goals are to build a business that can sustain itself during not only the good times, but also during the inevitable slower periods.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Traverse Architects – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Our firm specializes in simple modern homes that are rooted in craftsmanship, place and time. We believe good architecture is possible for all clients and projects, regardless of location or budget.

Our clients range from schoolteachers and financial investors to builders and artists. This is what I’m most proud of – that we can serve a wide range of clients and projects efficiently, effectively and beautifully.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are currently looking forward to hiking through the White Mountains, doing a Presidential Traverse at the end of the month. The rejuvenating benefits of hiking really fuel our spirit and creative energies. We plan to implement a “Hiking Friday” at the end of each month as a way to keep us fresh and full of spirit!
