Today we’d like to introduce you to David Bearg.
Thanks for sharing your story with us David. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Several things came together when Life Energy Associates was founded. A few years prior, I had earned my Master’s Degree from the Harvard School of Public Health and was working in the field of occupational (industrial) and ambient pollution assessment. Being the son of an HVAC design engineer and having my Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, I was able to transition to focus on indoor air quality in non-industrial environments. Initially working with a colleague from graduate school to begin gaining specific project experience, I went off on my own in January of 1980.
Since then, as the company evolved, I wrote a book on Indoor Air Quality and HVAC System. Most recently, as more people are becoming aware of the research results on the built environment microbiome. These results include the determination that bacterial communities in indoor environments contained many taxa that are absent or rare outdoors, but some taxa that are closely related to potential human pathogens.
Coupled with a movement away from dumb buildings to smart buildings there is also a movement to have buildings provide healthy and productive working environments. As a result, Life Energy Associates continues to evolve, to where now it is my son and I that are focusing on the determination of just how much ventilation is actually being provided in mechanically ventilated buildings.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As a consulting business the demand for our services has been variable, but fortunately I could also work on my other projects when things were slow…
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Life Energy Associates – what should we know?
Specializing the evaluation of the health of the indoor environment, my choice of parents and well as the education and early experience has made me extremely well qualified for the work we do.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
As I said, my parents helped. My father was an HVAC design engineer and so I had a ready resource to help me understand how the HVAC system was supposed to work. My degrees had a degree in economics so I was well prepared for the reality that building decisions are driven by the almighty dollar. Non-relatives who have helped me along the way, and were acknowledged in my book are David Gordon, John Spengler, Lou Diberardinis, Steven Larson, and William Turner.
