Darling brings eleven years of hairdressing experience to her salon and is continually driven by her passion: to make women look and feel fantastic by creating a unique style to mirror their inner beauty. After completing her hair design degree from Tafe Sydney Academy in Australia, Darling apprenticed with celebrity hairdresser Troy Thompson before continuing to work in his salon in Sydney. Given that Australia is a world leader in cutting edge fashion and hair design (and requires substantially more education and training), Darling’s unique experience has afforded her specific techniques and skills that are unmatched by local salons, let alone in the U.S.!
While working as an independent stylist in Newburyport, Darling visited local salons to gain a first-hand experience of the quality of work and the stylists’ degree of passion. Coupled with resounding feedback from local women who were largely unsatisfied with their experience and cut/color, she saw an opportunity to revolutionize the hair industry in Newburyport by opening her own salon.
Darling visualized a modern salon with a friendly, receptive vibe to make her clients feel immediately comfortable. Her approach is different than many; during each new clients’ 20 minute consultation, she will carefully explore lifestyle, personality, daily styling routing, bone structure, skin tone, and eye-color and before crafting a style that will most accurately reflect an individual. Darling is in tune to the latest trends in hairstyling and prides herself on being a familiar, warm, enthusiastic and creative hair stylist who focuses on providing each client with exceptional service. She maintains numerous certifications with Paul Mitchell, GK Hair, Alfaparf Milano, Di Biase Hair.
Darling’s latest career accomplishment has been working with the “Rene Furterer’s Team and top hairstylists in the world back stage for J Mendel at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Fall/ 2014. Darling was also the recipient of the North Shore Magazine “BONS 2014” Editor’s Choice award.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a business owner has not exactly been a smooth road, I have faced many obstacles with hiring qualified professionals in my business.
I am challenged constantly to stay on top of current trends in the hair industry.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Darling Merrill Hair Co. – what should we know?
I have owned my hair studio for 6 years. I am an independent hair stylist and plan to continue working independently for the foreseeable future. I specialize and am well known for hair coloring, and color corrections.
I am proud of the work that I do on a daily basis, and the gratification that I receive from my guests.
What sets me apart from other hair salons and stylists is my approach to coloring. I take a very scientific approach to hair coloring, and I walk through this step by step with my clients.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The characteristic that I feel is most important to my success is attention to detail.
